How to cut potatoes into fries 🍟 🔪

Have you seen the price of frozen potatoes in the grocery stores lately? With a family of 6 we have to limit how much pre-packaged convenience foods we buy because it just doesn’t fit in the budget.

I recently got this vegetable chopper and now I find any excuse to use it! Kids requested french fries for the family holiday party? SURE! I’m amazed at how easy it easy to chop them with this!

It's not just about saving money; there’s something incredibly satisfying about making them from scratch, and honestly, they taste so much better! If you've been wondering how to cut potatoes into perfect French fries, I'm here to share my easy method. First things first, choosing the right potato makes a difference. I always opt for Russet potatoes because their starchy texture makes for the crispiest fries. Once you have your potatoes, it’s time to clean them thoroughly. I just give them a good scrub under running water. Now for the cutting! While my vegetable chopper makes this part incredibly fast and easy – truly, my kids even love to do this part – you can absolutely achieve great results with just a knife. The key is uniformity for even cooking. If you're using a knife, start by squaring off the potato by slicing a thin piece off each side to create a block shape. This makes it much easier to handle. Then, slice the potato into even planks, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick, depending on your preference for thin or steak fries. Finally, stack a few planks and cut them lengthwise into sticks of the same thickness. The goal is to get consistent sizes so they all cook evenly. If you have a chopper, simply load your cleaned potatoes and press down – it cuts perfect fries SO EASILY! It's amazing how much time this saves and how uniform the cuts are. Once your potatoes are cut, don't skip the soaking step! This is crucial for removing extra starch, which helps make your fries crispy instead of soggy. I place all my cut potatoes in a large bowl, cover them with cold water, and let them soak for at least 30 minutes. You'll literally see the starch clouding the water. After soaking, it's time to rinse, rinse, rinse! Drain the starchy water and rinse the potatoes thoroughly under cold running water until the water runs clear. This ensures all that extra starch is gone. The next step is perhaps the most important for achieving that perfect crispiness: drying them out completely. If you don't remove as much moisture as possible, they will steam in the oven rather than crisping up. I spread them out on a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and pat dry with paper towel until they are as dry as can be. Seriously, pat dry with paper towel until there’s no visible moisture. Finally, it's time to season and bake! Add your dried potato sticks to a greased baking sheet. Make sure not to overcrowd the pan; use two sheets if necessary so they have enough space to crisp up. Spray potatoes lightly with cooking spray – I use olive oil spray – and then season well! I love a good blend of salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika, but feel free to experiment with your favorite seasonings. Bake them at 375°F for 25 minutes. After that, boost heat to 425°F for 20 minutes longer, or until they're golden brown and crispy to your liking. Keep an eye on them, as oven temperatures can vary. And just like that, you’ll have delicious, crispy homemade French fries ready to enjoy! It’s a simple process that yields amazing results, and it's far more satisfying and budget-friendly than any store-bought alternative.
