TBH: Playing is Hard…

I always looked down on the parents who were always too ‘busy’ to play with their kids. That is until I HAD kids. It’s so much easier said than done. It’s a constant battle between getting done what needs to be and giving them that undivided playing time. It seems like with every kid I have it gets harder and harder because of the workload increasing. I’m finding myself feeling guilty for not spending the time with them but truthfully… playing is hard! Some of us aren’t good at imagination and pretending, or arts & crafts, or teaching. So when it comes to play time we just try to entertain and buy all the independent toys

... Read morePlaying with children is widely recognized as an important part of their development, aiding social skills, creativity, and emotional bonding. Yet, many parents face genuine challenges when it comes to dedicating quality time for play. Factors such as increased workload, fatigue, and feeling unskilled in imaginative or craft-based activities can make playtime seem daunting rather than enjoyable. It’s common for parents to feel guilty about not spending enough time playing, especially if they previously judged other parents for the same reason. However, acknowledging these challenges honestly can be the first step toward finding manageable solutions. Many parents compensate by providing independent toys, but direct interaction remains crucial for fostering children’s cognitive and emotional growth. To make playtime both effective and enjoyable, parents can consider incorporating simple strategies: setting specific times devoted solely to play, choosing age-appropriate and interest-aligned activities, and even inviting children to participate in planning the play sessions. Using basic arts and crafts or storytelling can tap into creativity without overwhelming parents who feel less confident in these areas. Moreover, understanding that play doesn’t always have to involve structured activities or elaborate imagination is vital. Even small moments of shared attention, such as building blocks together or playing simple games, can significantly impact children’s development and parents’ sense of connection. Ultimately, balancing daily responsibilities and playtime requires compassion toward oneself and children. Recognizing playing is hard for many parents allows for realistic expectations and encourages seeking community support, such as parenting groups or online forums, where experiences and ideas are shared. This insight aligns with the concept of #UnpopularOpinion emphasized in the article, shedding light on the complexities behind playtime that often go unspoken. Embracing this perspective can help parents feel less isolated and more equipped to create meaningful, joyful moments with their children despite life’s demands.

Ya know i wouldn’t mind playing with her if she didn’t dictate how i play. When i try to insert my own storyline she says “pretend that didn’t happen” then say whatever she wants to happen. I’m just the parrot and that’s not fun at all. And i agree, it’s not fun if you’re not interested in the game. I have to tell myself it’s her way of processing things but I’m so bored of the same game everyday and not getting any say in the game play

I completely agree and I have found a few things that help. Building toys are a big help! We have a big box of the off-brand magnetic tiles and my daughter loves to build things with me using them. Her brother loves to knock our creations down at the end 😂. Don’t think your play time attention needs to be undivided either! My daughter often takes my order and brings me “drinks” (actually just a play doh container) while I am folding laundry or doing dishes. She is usually playing cafe/restaurant and I am her customer, but I keep doing whatever chore it is that needs to be done.

Being a social media manager isn’t hard. THIS IS!
Finding clients? Not hard. Keeping them? Not hard. Posting content? Not hard. You know what is? Showing up like someone who believes they belong here. Selling before you feel 100% “ready.” Pitching without waiting for permission. It’s your mindset that will mess you up - not the job. Yo
