Do you think this is fair?

for the longest time I have hated doing laundry. I hate carrying heavy things and going to the basement where the washer and dryer are. My partner hates doing dishes and touching wet gross food. We made the agreement early on to assign the other person the task we hate, and it’s worked out! There’s equally as much dishes as there is laundry through the week, and both of us have to stay on top of it before it gets out of hand. As far as other chores, we split them 50/50 based on what needs to be done and when. Sometimes I’ll pick up the slack and do more because he has had a busy week, sometimes I am taking a break and getting out of the house and he picks up and does things that are needing to be done while I’m gone. Either way it’s a team effort and a basic responsibility that all men and women should know how to do. Do you think this is fair? How do you split up the household “chores”?

... Read moreMany couples find themselves navigating the challenge of sharing household chores in ways that feel fair to both partners. One effective strategy is to trade off tasks that each person dislikes the most, such as laundry or washing dishes. For example, if one partner hates doing laundry due to the inconvenience of carrying heavy loads or going to inconvenient locations like the basement, the other might take on that responsibility while the first partner manages dishes, especially if they don't mind or it's easier for them. This kind of chore division respects individual preferences and reduces resentment. It's vital to acknowledge that chores can pile up quickly and require both partners to stay on top of their duties regularly. The key to success is open communication and flexibility—sometimes one partner might pick up more chores when the other is busy or needs a break. Interestingly, some households struggle without appliances like dishwashers, which can make dishwashing more of a burdensome chore, increasing the importance of clear agreements on who does what. Beyond laundry and dishes, splitting other household responsibilities 50/50 or based on availability and capacity ensures an ongoing balance. In essence, sharing chores this way promotes teamwork and equal responsibility, which are essential for a healthy relationship. Also, learning essential skills like doing laundry and dishes is a basic adult responsibility everyone should know. Whether by a strict division or more fluid sharing depending on circumstances, fairness in chores comes down to cooperation, respect, and communication.
