I can’t keep this in…
so it was winter time. I was leaving my grandmas with my baby and it was below freezing so I started the car and let it run to heat up. I packed my things up and grabbed my baby and got in the car. I looked behind me, reversed, and heard a loud squeal. I screamed and jumped out of the car. As I was getting out my grandma came running outside because she said she didn’t see the dog inside and he was really old, blind, and partially deaf. She heard the squeal as she made her way to the driveway and we both locked eyes. I dropped to the ground bawling my eyes out. I was DEVASTATED. Our family dog I had had since I was in 2nd grade was ran over and not doing well. He had a lot of health complications and my grandma was debating putting him down and out of his misery. She was so so sad but also so relieved that she did not have to make the decision to put him down herself now. He slowly passed and she held him while he went. I could not stop feeling immense guilt and sadness. She later told me that she thinks he was laying down by the exhaust behind the tire to warm up.
That’s a situation I will forever remember and feel so sorry for. Ever since then I have triple checked behind me in a car in fear of a dog, child, or person being behind me. It was the worst moment of my life and I will never be able to forget it.
Accidents involving pets around vehicles are unfortunately more common than many realize, especially during colder months when animals seek warmth near car exhausts or tires. This tragedy reminds us to take extra precautions by walking around the vehicle, making noise, or even installing rearview cameras and sensors to detect movement behind the car. Raising awareness about such incidents encourages responsible pet safety. Guilt and grief from unintended harm to loved animals can be overwhelming, but it is vital to focus on prevention and education. Sharing authentic stories like this not only helps others avoid similar pain but also strengthens the bond of community through empathy and support. Remember, safety measures are never too much when it comes to protecting vulnerable animals, children, and people from accidents around vehicles.
