Getting laid off before the holidays 🥰

Yeah that’s right! Laid off before the holidays 🥲 it broke my heart hearing the news because I put so much of my OWN time and effort into this along with MY OWN resources. I have never been one to just coast by work, I’m a natural go-getter (thanks to my dad). I managed to build this company up by just being a small agent to then being a manager in my dept and then it happened, I got demoted.

Well surely you got demoted because of your own error??

Yeah no no it was because they could no longer afford me. So they put me back as an agent but “ensured me” that I would be back in no time! ….8 months have past. I have not been back in management. In this time I was taking calls like a regular representative BUT also still expected to be a business analyst at the same time without the pay. Reporting how to better our operations while taking calls and getting yelled at.

Then I get a calendar notification on teams. A MEETING!!! I personally love meetings so my excitement shot up. This could be it! I’m going back! YES! …. “Our contract is up for this client we work with so you all will be having your last day December 19th.” Oh. OH. Yeah so that’s what happened and now I’m having to navigate what’s next for me. I don’t want to be a customer representative I want to make operational changes I want to be in the room where it happens (Hamilton reference). Wish me luck! #laidoff #corporategirl #workstruggles #unfiltered

... Read moreLosing a job right before the holidays can be an emotional and challenging experience, particularly when you've invested so much personal time and effort into your work. It’s important to remember that layoffs often reflect broader business decisions rather than individual performance. When faced with such a situation, taking proactive steps towards recovery and future opportunities can make a significant difference. One useful strategy is to treat this time as an opportunity for reflection and growth. Assess your skills and passions—consider what parts of your former roles energized you most. For example, if you enjoyed analyzing operations or leading teams but found yourself stuck in roles that didn't utilize your strengths, now might be the time to upskill or seek roles that align better with your career goals. Networking is vital. Reach out to former colleagues, mentors, and industry contacts to explore potential job openings or freelance opportunities. Joining professional groups or online communities related to your field can also provide support and information about emerging opportunities. Furthermore, don't underestimate the power of updating your resume and online profiles to reflect recent achievements and skills. Highlight experiences where you drove improvements or took initiative, as these examples demonstrate your value to prospective employers. Mental well-being should also be a priority during this time. Job loss can affect confidence and motivation; consider joining support groups or speaking with a career counselor to maintain a positive outlook and develop a plan moving forward. Finally, embrace your ambition to be "in the room where it happens." Seeking roles that enable you to influence operational changes or strategy will require persistence, continuous learning, and sometimes patience, but aligning your next job with your career aspirations is ultimately rewarding. Remember, a layoff is a setback, not an end. With resilience, strategic planning, and support, you can navigate through this phase and find new pathways to professional fulfillment.
