📚DIY Felt Bookmarks!📚
All the felt I used was found at a garage sale in a scrap bag. I cut the two back and front pieces for the bookmark, sewed the design on, and then while I was sewing the two pieces together I slipped a thin piece of cardboard in between them to help hold its shape!
I absolutely adore making things by hand, and these DIY felt bookmarks have quickly become one of my favorite projects! There’s something incredibly satisfying about transforming simple materials into something beautiful and practical. If you’re a fellow book lover or just enjoy a cozy craft, you’re in for a treat. I've found that not only are they super fun to create, but they also make the most thoughtful, personalized gifts. Let's dive a bit deeper into how you can craft your own unique felt bookmarks. Beyond just having some felt, gathering your materials is the first step. You'll need various colors of felt – wool felt or acrylic felt both work wonderfully, with wool felt offering a slightly more luxurious feel. Don't forget embroidery floss in coordinating colors for stitching those lovely details, a sharp pair of fabric scissors, and an embroidery needle. For that crucial shape-holding element, I used a thin piece of cardboard, but you could also opt for stiff interfacing or even a few layers of felt scraps sewn together for a softer, yet still firm, bookmark. Fabric glue can be handy for securing small appliqué pieces before stitching. Now for the fun part: designing and assembling! Start by sketching your desired bookmark shape on paper – a classic rectangular shape is always good, or perhaps a more playful design like a pointed banner. Cut two identical pieces of felt for the front and back of your bookmark. This is where your creativity truly shines! Before you sew the two main pieces together, think about your embellishments. For instance, creating those charming ladybugs I showed involves cutting small red felt circles and adding tiny black dots with embroidery floss or a fabric marker. For a pretty daisy, white felt petals around a yellow felt circle are perfect. And those colorful jam jars? Cut different colored felt into jar shapes, add contrasting 'lids,' and maybe even embroider little fruit outlines or text like 'JAM' on them. These details are sewn onto one of your felt pieces – the front – at this stage. Once your design is beautifully stitched onto the front piece, it's time to assemble the bookmark. Place your decorated front piece directly on top of the plain back piece. Now, using a contrasting or matching embroidery floss, begin stitching around the edges. I find a simple running stitch or a decorative blanket stitch works beautifully for this. As you sew along, when you’re about halfway or two-thirds of the way around, gently slip your thin piece of cardboard (or chosen stiffener) in between the two felt layers. Make sure it fits snugly and extends most of the way up the bookmark to ensure good rigidity. Then, continue stitching to close up the remaining edges, securing the stiffener firmly inside. The red stitching and pink stitching on my examples really make the edges pop! The beauty of DIY felt bookmarks is the endless possibilities for customization. Beyond ladybugs and jam jars, you could create bookmarks shaped like your favorite animals, flowers, or even letters of the alphabet. Think about seasonal themes – a festive snowflake for winter, a bright sun for summer. You can personalize them further by embroidering initials or a special date. These crafts are fantastic for using up those small felt scraps you might have lying around, making them an eco-friendly project too. Plus, the process itself is incredibly relaxing. Ultimately, making your own felt bookmarks is more than just a craft; it's a way to add a personal touch to your reading world or give a truly unique gift. They are sturdy, soft, and bring a little bit of handmade joy to every page. So grab your felt, needle, and thread, and start crafting your next favorite reading companion!
