In some of the got cart rental places, you have to leave your physical drivers license with them.

The ferry ride itself is quick and scenic, about 20-25 minutes, dropping you right in the heart of the island. Once on Isla Mujeres, golf carts are king! While the original post mentioned leaving your license, many reputable places just take a copy or a deposit. Always negotiate prices if you can, especially for multi-day rentals. Taxis are also readily available and reasonably priced for longer distances, but for exploring downtown, walking is perfect. What to Do Beyond the Beach: While Playa Norte is undeniably stunning with its calm, shallow waters and soft sand (perfect for swimming!), don't limit yourself. I always recommend renting a golf cart for a day to explore the entire island. Head south to Punta Sur, home to a sculpture park, an ancient Mayan temple dedicated to Ixchel (the goddess of fertility), and breathtaking cliffside views. It's truly magical at sunrise. Another personal favorite is the Tortugranja, or Turtle Farm. It's a small, non-profit organization dedicated to protecting sea turtles, and it's a great educational stop, especially if you're traveling with kids or just love marine life. Downtown Isla Mujeres, often referred to as 'El Centro,' is fantastic for wandering through colorful streets, browsing artisan shops, and soaking in the vibrant local atmosphere in the evenings. Look for cochinita pibil tacos (slow-roasted pork) for an authentic Yucatecan flavor, or fresh ceviche at a beachfront shack. I once stumbled upon a tiny spot serving the most incredible fresh-caught grilled fish – sometimes the best places are the ones you just discover by walking around. Don't be afraid to try street food; it's often the most delicious and affordable. Where to Stay & Vibe: The original tip about avoiding Playa Norte for a quieter stay is spot on if you prefer peace. The north end (Playa Norte area) is lively, with more resorts and beach clubs. If you're looking for a more laid-back vibe, consider staying slightly further south from El Centro, or even on the Caribbean side for stunning sunrises. There are charming boutique hotels, guesthouses, and even budget-friendly hostels available. Each area offers a different experience, so think about what kind of trip you want! A Note on Respectful Tourism: The point about displacement of natives is a real and important one. As visitors, we can contribute positively by supporting local businesses, being mindful of our environmental impact (e.g., using reef-safe sunscreen, reducing plastic), and respecting local customs and culture. Engaging with locals respectfully and learning a few Spanish phrases can go a long way in making your trip more meaningful.
