How to Forget S & Spell Wrong on IELTS Listening Exam 🎧
1. Why do we like to miss the "s" or misspell?
✏️. The problem, forget the "s."
- Cause 1: The sound / s / or / z / at the end of a word is often pronounced very softly, or joined to the next word, causing the ear to catch up.
- Cause 2: Not immediately notice the grammar, especially the plural, and the verb to fill s in the 3rd mens singular chairman.
- Cause 3: Write according to the sound heard only. Without checking the reasonableness of the sentence.
✏️ The problem is misspelled.
- Cause 1: It's not accurate to spell, it's just sound, so I guess from what I hear.
- Cause 2: Sound comes fast + time is limited. Write in a hurry.
- Cause 3: homophones that are easy to confuse, such as their / there, flowers / flour.
2. How to solve the problem, forget the "s"
🎧 Train your ears to catch the sound at the end of the word.
- Select a short audio (e.g., BBC Learning English, Cambridge IELTS) and listen to capture the sound at the end of a particular word.
- Listen a few times and compare it to the transcript. See which part is missed.
- When shadowing, focus on the end of the word to make the ears familiar.
🎧 Use grammar sense to make decisions.
Before listening, try scanning a quick question to guess the Gramar structure:
- If there are many, several, a lot of, numbers → often plural nouns.
- If the president is he / she / it → the verb must fill the "s."
Even if you don't listen to the last sound, you can still use grammar logic to choose the answer.
🎧 Use personal symbols.
- Practice short notation during the exam, e.g.
"+ S" = plural
"V + s" = 3rd mens singular verb
"?" = Still not confident.
These symbols will help remind you to come back to Czech again before filling in the answer.
3. How to solve the problem of misspelling
📍 Create a private Word Bank.
Every time you spell it wrong, write it down in categories (day / month, place, number, academic word) and repeat it 5-10 times to remember it for a long time.
📍 Practice Listening & Spelling (Spelling)
Practice frequent alphabetical spelling, especially specific names and place names.
Introduce a web like ESL Fast or British Council Listening for spelling drills.
📍. Study with transcript.
Practice Order: Take the exam → Czech transcript → Highlight the wrong word → Rewrite the original sentence 3-5 times.
Don't forget to check capitals in specific names and month names.
📍. Use the "Look - Cover - Write - Check" method.
See Vocabulary → Closed → Written → Czech
Repeat until not misspelled again
📍 Be careful of "traps," terms.
Pay attention to homophones (their / there, flowers / flour)
And words that switch letters often (receive, separate, choice)
This group is the most frequent source of losing points in Listening.
4. Introduce a training plan (Roadmap)
🔹 Weeks 1-2
- Listen to a short audio (1-2 minutes), focus on the end of the word, and write down "+ S."
- Practice dictation 5-10 sentences a day to correct spelling.
- Slow action. Focus on accuracy rather than speed.
🔹 Weeks 3-4
- Listen to longer audio (3-5 minutes) at IELTS speeds
- Start taking the Gap-filling exam with Grammar for thinking.
- Czech transcript → Highlight the point of forgetting the "s" or misspelling → Rewrite 5 times
🔹 Weeks 5-6
- Listening section by section (10 items)
- Practice the Czech answer immediately after listening.
- Practice spelling names, people, places and numbers.
- Limit the time to move answers to familiar with the exam room atmosphere.
🔹 Week 7 onwards
- Full test IELTS Listening (40 items) 2-3 times a week
- After done, summary of error type (% forget s,% misspelled)
- Target to reduce error count by 50% within 2 weeks
- Switch listening to podcasts, BBC, TED Talks to develop natural sound capture.
Please everyone to practice effectively. 💙
