Suffix is "a word or syllable filled at the end of a word."
To change the meaning or type of word (Part of Speech)
Such as
• happy → happiness (from adjective → naung)
• teach → teacher (from verb → naung)
• quick → quick (from adjective → adverb)

จากประสบการณ์การเรียนภาษาอังกฤษ ผมพบว่า ‘suffix’ เป็นเครื่องมือช่วยเดาความหมายคำศัพท์ใหม่ๆ ได้ดีมากอย่างไม่น่าเชื่อ ก่อนหน้านี้เวลาพบคำใหม่ๆ เช่น development หรือ kindness ผมจะงงมากว่าความหมายคืออะไร แต่เมื่อรู้ว่า suffix -ment แปลว่า "การทำ" หรือ -ness แปลว่า "ความรู้สึก" ก็ช่วยให้เข้าใจคำศัพท์ได้ไวขึ้นมาก นอกจากนี้ การเรียนรู้ suffix ยังช่วยให้การพูดและเขียนดูเป็นมืออาชีพมากขึ้น ผมลองฝึกใช้คำที่เติม suffix เช่น quickly, beautiful ในบทสนทนาและงานเขียน IELTS Writing ทำให้ได้คะแนนดีขึ้นเพราะดูเป็นคำศัพท์ที่หลากหลายและถูกต้องตามหลักภาษา เทคนิคที่ผมใช้คือ ทำ flashcards เก็บ suffix ยอดนิยมที่เจอบ่อย และฝึกแยกประเภทคำ เช่น adjective, noun หรือ adverb จาก suffix ที่ต่างกัน ทำให้เวลาประเมินความหมายคำใหม่ๆ รู้ทันที เช่น -er/-or หมายถึง คนที่ทำสิ่งนั้น เช่น teacher, actor นอกจากนี้ยังช่วยในการทำความเข้าใจคำที่ซับซ้อนขึ้น เรียนรู้ความแตกต่างระหว่างคำที่เติม -less ที่แปลว่า "ไม่มี" กับ -ful ที่แปลว่า "เต็มไปด้วย" ทำให้สามารถสื่อสารได้อย่างถูกต้องและชัดเจนขึ้น จาก OCR content ในบทความ ยังมี suffix อื่นๆ ที่น่าสนใจและพบได้บ่อยอย่าง -ible, -ish, -en, -ous ที่เป็นคำคุณศัพท์ ช่วยขยายความรู้ว่า suffix สามารถบอกลักษณะหรือความสามารถของสิ่งต่างๆ ได้อีกด้วย สรุปคือ การเข้าใจและฝึกใช้ suffix ไม่เพียงช่วยเพิ่มความรู้คำศัพท์ แต่ยังช่วยพัฒนาภาษาอังกฤษในทุกด้านทั้งการฟัง พูด อ่าน เขียน โดยเฉพาะผู้ที่ต้องการเพิ่มคะแนนสอบ IELTS หรือพัฒนาทักษะการสื่อสารอย่างจริงจัง แนะนำให้เริ่มต้นศึกษาสิฟฟิกซ์พร้อมฝึกใช้ในชีวิตประจำวันครับ
