... Read moreHey future brides and grooms! Let's talk about one of those classic wedding traditions that can sometimes feel a little...intimidating: the garter removal and toss. When I was planning my wedding, I had so many questions about how to make it fun without feeling awkward, and I know many of you do too! This tradition dates way back, but nowadays, it's all about adding a playful, lighthearted moment to your reception. For us, deciding to include the garter toss was about embracing a bit of fun. So, based on my experience and what I've seen at other weddings, here are some quick tips to ensure your garter removal and toss goes smoothly and is a blast for everyone involved. 1 MIN WEDDING TIPS: Making Your Garter Removal & Toss a Hit! Communication is Key (Bride & Groom): Before the big day, chat with your partner about how you both envision this moment. Do you want it super silly and theatrical, or more sweet and traditional? Knowing what you both prefer will set the tone. My husband and I agreed we wanted it quick, fun, and just a little cheeky – and it worked perfectly! Pick the Right Spot & Music: Work with your DJ or band to pick a good moment during the reception when most guests are present and ready for some entertainment. The music choice is HUGE! Upbeat, playful songs can really elevate the mood and get guests excited. Think classics that make people smile. The Actual Removal – Keep it Classy (or Funny!): This is where the groom takes the spotlight. He can get down on one knee, or even crawl a little for some laughs! Just remember, the goal is fun, not discomfort. The garter removal doesn't have to be overly dramatic; a quick, smooth motion is often best. Some grooms even use their teeth for a playful touch, but make sure the bride is comfortable with this beforehand! The Toss – Aim for the Single Guys! Once the garter is off, gather all the single men on the dance floor. A good announcer (your DJ or MC) can really hype up the crowd. The groom then turns his back and tosses the garter over his shoulder. The reaction from the guys scrambling for it is always priceless! We got some amazing photos of this moment. Consider Alternatives: If the garter removal or toss isn't your thing, that's totally okay! Your wedding day is about *you*. Some couples opt for an anniversary dance (where the longest married couple gets recognized), or a bouquet toss for all guests (not just singles), or simply skip this tradition altogether. Don't feel pressured to do anything that doesn't feel authentic to you both. Work with Your Photographer/Videographer: Let your photo and video team know if the garter removal/toss is an important moment for you. They can be ready to capture all the reactions, from the bride's anticipation to the groom's showmanship and the scramble for the garter. These are often some of the most candid and hilarious shots of the day! Ultimately, the garter removal and toss is a tradition that can add a lot of personality to your wedding. Whether you keep it traditional, add your own spin, or decide to skip it, make sure it reflects your style as a couple. My biggest piece of advice is to relax, have fun, and enjoy every single moment!
