What I’ve learned so far studying abroad 🇫🇷

Wow, it's wild how much you learn beyond textbooks when you're actually living and studying in a place like France! One of the biggest lessons has been adapting to cultural nuances that go beyond what you read in a guide book. It’s more than just appreciating different ways of thinking; it’s about understanding the unspoken rules – like the importance of a proper greeting, the rhythm of a shared meal, or the subtle art of conversation. I’ve definitely learned to slow down and savor moments, a stark contrast to the fast pace I was used to back home. This applies even to academic life; while the content might be similar, the teaching styles and expectations can be quite different, pushing you to think and engage in new ways. I've also had to become a pro at budgeting. Those beautiful bouquets of tulips for 10 euros? Totally worth it for a little joy, but you quickly learn where to save on daily essentials so you can splurge on experiences – like that perfect chocolate croissant and cappuccino moment at a cozy local cafe, perhaps even one near a campus like SCAD Lacoste, which adds such a unique artistic flair to the experience. Every euro spent becomes a conscious decision, which is a huge step in becoming financially savvy. From grocery shopping at local markets to finding student deals, these practical skills are invaluable. Maintaining self-care has also taken on a new meaning. While it's tempting to say yes to every single outing to avoid FOMO, I’ve realized the critical importance of downtime. Sometimes, my perfect self-care looks like a quiet afternoon journaling in a park, or simply enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of my surroundings, recharging for the next adventure. It’s okay to have those moments of stillness amidst all the exploration. Connecting with fellow students from around the world and even trying to strike up conversations with locals has been incredibly rewarding, too. Even just ordering my coffee in French, despite my beginner-level skills, always brings a small sense of accomplishment and builds confidence. These small interactions truly make you feel like you're part of the community, not just a visitor. It’s an ongoing process of learning, growing, and savoring every single moment here in France, proving that some of the best education happens outside the classroom!
