Financial Glow Up - planner idea!!

Never being able to stick to a planner in the traditional sense and now entering into my Finance Era I decided to see if I can make the two work together.

I initially challenged myself to track the FREQUENCY of my spending by writing down on a monthly calendar when I spend money. It became clear that I was spending money on both needs and wants every other day.

Then I challenged myself to a Financial Fast. Before the Fast I lumped all of my bills and divided up which paycheck they would fall into. I also decided that when I buy groceries I fill up my gas tank.

Results: I have gone 5 days at a stretch between shopping!!!! Random Discretionary Spending has dropped DRAMATICALLY.

Goals: Deposit $200 to $500 into my HYSA per paycheck. Fingers crossed.

Tracking the frequency of expenditures on a monthly calendar helps identify patterns in both necessary and non-essential purchases, providing insight into potential areas for cutbacks. This approach aligns closely with behavioral finance principles, which emphasize that monitoring spending behavior increases mindfulness and control over finances. A financial fast, as highlighted by the strategy of grouping bills by paychecks and limiting shopping days, is an effective tool to curb impulsive spending. This method allows individuals to prioritize essential expenses and create room for savings. Incorporating practical habits, like combining grocery trips with filling a gas tank, maximizes efficiency and further limits unnecessary expenditures. Setting achievable savings goals, such as depositing $200 to $500 into a High-Yield Savings Account (HYSA) per paycheck, is a critical step toward financial growth. HYSAs offer higher interest rates compared to traditional savings accounts, helping funds grow faster over time. Experts often recommend automating such deposits to ensure consistency and to build a reliable emergency fund or savings baseline. For those seeking even greater financial clarity, combining digital tools with traditional planners can enhance tracking accuracy and provide real-time budget feedback. Apps with spending trackers can categorize expenses and offer visual analytics, complementing the tactile benefits of manually noting transactions on a calendar. Overall, embracing a finance-focused planner and committing to spending reviews encourage lasting positive financial behavior changes. This strategy not only reduces random discretionary spending but also supports deliberate saving efforts, empowering users to confidently progress toward their financial goals.
