Sometimes you just gotta paint a bunch of blobs and shapes and see where the drawing takes you.
Iâve been having creative block and option paralysis lately, so I decided to break out my watercolors and micron pens. Having no plan and no expectations really makes space for creativity to come through.
How I Made It:
ð watercolors
ð micron pens
ð whatever paintbrushes I could find (I only found 2)
Step 1: Make a shape. It doesnât have to be perfect, and you donât need to have an idea of what you want it to be.
Step 2: Cover the page in said weird shapes.
Step 3: Once the paint is completely dry, use a pen or a marker or literally whatever and draw what you see. (Some of blobs were obvious in what they wanted to become, and for some I had to sit and think about it for a few minutes.)
Step 4: I havenât gotten to this part myself, BUT I really want to buy a white gel pen for highlights.

When facing creative block, breaking away from rigid plans can ignite your artistic flow. Abstract art techniques, such as painting blobs and ambiguous shapes with watercolors, can help remove the pressure of perfection and open pathways to creativity. Using tools like micron pens to outline and define these shapes encourages observation skills and imaginative interpretationâeach blob can transform into a unique visual story. This freeform process includes several key steps: start by randomly applying watercolor blobs without concern for form or meaning. Allow the paint to dry completely to ensure clean pen lines. Then, take your micron pen or marker and draw over the shapes to reveal hidden figures or patterns you perceive, turning ambiguity into intentional art. Adding white gel pen highlights can bring contrast and dimension, enhancing focal points and giving your piece a polished finish. This method not only cultivates spontaneous creativity but also combats "option paralysis"âthe overabundance of choices that can hinder starting a project. By limiting yourself to just a few materials such as a couple of paintbrushes, watercolors, and fine liners, you focus your energy on interpretation rather than complexity. Incorporating hashtags like #artinspiration, #artblock, #watercolorideas, and #watercolorartist can connect you to a community of artists embracing experimental and expressive techniques. Embracing imperfection and the unexpected in abstract watercolor art allows artists of all levels to rediscover joy and motivation in their creative journey. The OCR text from the imagesâ"BUTIER H FiNiSHED PAiNTiNG" and "WORK iN PROGRESS"âreflects the evolving nature of this approach, where artworks develop organically and the final outcome celebrates process over precision. This approach emphasizes that sometimes the best art comes from simply letting the paint and pen guide you, without fixed expectations.
