My entry for the 2026 Rat Fink Art Contest 🔥 I don’t usually play around with halftone shading a ton but I wanted to experiment with it more especially for this to try to stay true to some of the og Rat Fink artwork. I’m gonna have to do more of my skulls in this style for sure because holyyyyyyyy🔥🔥 I think voting for this starts tomorrow or Saturday but either way I’ll post it to my story, I’m super stoked about this one!! 🙌🙌 #ratfink #gnarlymagazine #artcontest #fanart #halftone

For this piece, I decided to delve deeper into halftone shading—a method that adds depth and a vintage comic-book feel by using patterns of dots. While it initially seemed challenging to replicate the intricate dot gradients true to the OG Rat Fink artwork, I found the process rewarding as it brought out a distinctive texture and mood in the piece. Using halftone shading not only pays homage to the classic style but also improves my shading skills and attention to detail. I experimented with various dot sizes and densities to create smooth transitions between light and shadow, which made the skull artwork pop with dynamic contrast. This method really emphasizes the graphic quality of the illustration and adds an edgy, gnarly aesthetic fitting for Rat Fink fanart. Art contests like this also foster community engagement and allow artists to showcase talent globally. Sharing progress updates and anticipating voting moments keeps me motivated and connected with fellow artists and fans. I highly recommend other creatives try halftone shading for their next project—it’s a refreshing way to rethink shadows and textures beyond traditional gradient fills or strokes. Looking ahead, I’m excited to incorporate this technique more into my skull designs and other illustrations, continually evolving my style while respecting the roots that inspire me. If you’re interested in lowbrow art or fanart culture, following contests like Rat Fink can provide great insights and encouragement for your own artistic journey.
