Repurposing chicken coop

2025/11/19 Edited to

... Read moreHey fellow chicken lovers! I'm so excited to share my latest project with you all: turning our underutilized carport into an amazing, functional chicken coop! If you've got an old carport just sitting there, trust me, this is one of the best ways to repurpose it and give your feathered friends a fantastic new home. Why a Carport Makes a Great Chicken Coop (My Experience!) When we first started thinking about expanding our flock, I was dreading the cost of a new coop. Then, it hit me – our carport! It already had a roof and a solid frame, which immediately saved us a ton of time and money on basic construction. The existing footprint provided ample space, which is perfect for happy, healthy chickens who need room to roam. Plus, it offered instant shelter from rain, sun, and even some wind, giving us a head start on weather protection. It felt like a blank canvas just waiting for a chicken-friendly makeover! Key Considerations for Your Carport Coop Conversion Before diving in, I spent a lot of time researching and planning. Here are the things I found most important: Security is #1: My biggest concern was predators. We live in an area with raccoons, foxes, and even hawks. I used heavy-duty hardware cloth (not just chicken wire, which isn't predator-proof!) to enclose all open sides. Make sure to bury the hardware cloth at least 6-12 inches deep around the perimeter to prevent digging predators. I also added a secure, latching door that I double-checked every night. Ventilation is Crucial: Chickens need good airflow to prevent respiratory issues, especially in warmer months. While the carport offered natural ventilation, I made sure not to completely seal it off. I left some gaps at the top (covered with hardware cloth) and ensured there was always a breeze. In winter, I used tarps on some sides to block harsh winds but kept an opening for air circulation. Roosting & Nesting Space: Every good coop needs these! I used sturdy wooden planks for roosting bars, making sure they were wide enough for my hens' feet to grip comfortably. For nest boxes, I repurposed old crates and plastic tubs, lining them with straw. I placed them in a quiet, slightly darker area of the coop, and my girls love them! Easy Cleaning: This is a big one! I opted for a dirt floor (our carport already had one), which I covered with a thick layer of pine shavings using the deep litter method. This makes cleaning less frequent and adds to the coop's insulation. I also made sure I could easily access all areas for regular muck-outs. Weather Protection: Beyond the roof, consider adding solid panels or heavy-duty tarps to the sides that face prevailing winds or intense sun/rain. This provides extra comfort and protection for your flock, especially during extreme weather. My DIY Steps & Ideas Enclosing the Sides: We built simple wooden frames to fit between the existing carport posts. Then, we stapled hardware cloth securely to these frames. For added privacy and wind block, I attached some corrugated plastic panels to the lower sections of some walls. Building a Door: I constructed a simple wooden door frame and covered it with hardware cloth. I used strong hinges and a sliding bolt latch for security. Adding a Chicken Run: We extended the secure area outside the main carport structure, creating a spacious covered run. This gives the chickens more space to forage safely. Waterers and Feeders: I hung waterers and feeders from the carport frame to keep them off the ground and prevent contamination. This also makes them harder for rodents to access. Converting our carport was such a rewarding project! It wasn't just about saving money; it was about giving our chickens a unique and spacious home that perfectly suits our needs. If you're looking for creative and budget-friendly carport chicken coop ideas, I highly recommend giving this a try!
