Never Forget.
It was a nice fall morning on Sept 11, 2001. I remember it being very peaceful indeed. I was home on emergency leave from Korea because my sister had been in a motorcycle accident. The famous R&B singer- Aaliyah had just died a few weeks earlier as well. I heard my mom scream “Jesus!” so I ran in the room to see what was going on.
As I looked at the television that she was so fixated on, I saw the 2nd plane hit a building. I couldn’t believe what my eyes were seeing! How could this happen? Did the pilot fall asleep? I needed answers!
Finally, the realization of a terrorist attack hit me and with having only 8 years in the military at the time, I knew then that I was going to war…
Now...24 years later, 3 deployments, 1 combat action badge, PTSD, losing at least 10 Soldiers that l’d grown to know personally, and countless civilians and government workers that were stricken with cancer in the aftermath...I’ve retired and am ever so grateful that l’ve made it back home to my kids each time safe and sound.
I can tell you now, life has not been the same for me. For I take nothing for granted. I honor all of those who’ve lost their lives on this cumbersome day.
So while the nation is in an uproar about the latest killings and seems to show no remorse in the regard for life, I pray that you at least take a moment of silence in this regard.
