New fave author

Early Departures

By Justin A. Reynolds

IG: @justinwritesya

This book was selected in GetLit bookclub back in February. First book from this author that I’ve read and I really enjoyed his style of writing….so much that I have already added another book from him to my reading stack for this month.

I missed out on the bookclub monthly discussion for Early Departure (I was really looking forward to this one) so I ended up reading it again and taking more notes to add in my reading journal later.

Synopsis:

What if you could bring your best friend back to life—but only for a short time?

Jamal’s best friend, Q, doesn’t know that he died, and that he’s about to die . . . again. He doesn’t know that Jamal tried to save him. And that the reason they haven’t been friends for two years is because Jamal blames Q for the accident that killed his parents.

But what if Jamal could have a second chance? A new technology allows Q to be reanimated for a few weeks before he dies . . . permanently. And Q’s mom is not about to let anyone ruin this miracle by telling Q about his impending death. So how can Jamal fix everything if he can’t tell Q the truth?

Early Departures weaves together loss, grief, friendship, and love to form a wholly unique homage to the bonds that bring people together for life—and beyond.

... Read moreOkay, Lemon8 fam, I'm still buzzing from finishing 'Early Departures' and truly, Justin A. Reynolds has cemented his spot as my new favorite YA author! When I find an author whose writing just *clicks*, I immediately want to devour everything they've written. And let me tell you, if you're like me and always on the hunt for your next great read – especially if you’re looking for a fantastic romance author or just incredible storytelling – then you absolutely need to check out his other works. Speaking of which, I've heard amazing things about his book, 'Opposite of Always' (which I actually saw mentioned on one of his book covers – how cool is that?!). While 'Early Departures' dives deep into grief and sci-fi with a touch of poignant love, 'Opposite of Always' is a beloved YA romance that many readers rave about. I'm adding it to my queue right after this! It's so exciting to find an author who can masterfully craft such different yet equally compelling narratives. If you're someone who swoons over 'second chance' tropes or intricate relationship dynamics, I'm confident that 'Opposite of Always' will be right up your alley. It really shows Reynolds' versatility in exploring the many facets of human connection, whether it's through the lens of friendship, loss, or blossoming romance. Now, for those of you who might be interested in gaming or love diving into complex, immersive worlds – don't scroll past this author! While books and games are different mediums, the thrill of exploring a meticulously crafted story, making emotional connections with characters, and figuring out how a unique 'system' or premise works can be incredibly similar. In 'Early Departures,' the concept of Q being reanimated for a short time creates such a high-stakes, almost 'game-like' scenario. Jamal has a limited 'playthrough' to fix things, to navigate this unique challenge. It’s like a narrative quest with profound emotional consequences. Think about it: in many games, you're presented with a unique world and a set of rules, and you have to make choices that impact the outcome. Justin A. Reynolds' writing often builds these intricate emotional landscapes where characters face impossible choices, much like navigating a challenging level or a branching narrative in a game. The emotional investment you feel in Jamal and Q's journey, the desire to see how they 'win' against the clock, mirrors the engagement you get from a truly great gaming experience. It's about being fully transported, feeling the urgency, and connecting deeply with the characters' struggles and triumphs. If you appreciate rich world-building (even if it's an emotional world instead of a fantasy one) and narratives that keep you guessing, you’ll find a lot to love here. It's a different kind of adventure, but just as rewarding! So, whether you're searching for your next favorite romance author, a compelling YA read that makes you think, or just an escape into a story as immersive as your favorite game, Justin A. Reynolds is definitely an author to watch. I can't wait to read more of his brilliant work and I highly recommend you do too!

If you saw the name Gabrielle Zevin, the first book you would probably think of is Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. It was my first book by her and I LOVED it. It was so cool to read a book that had video games as a main element. The writing was so great though I knew I wanted to try some of her
