Chapter 10: The Best & Worst Reasons to Start a Podcast

The Best Reasons

1. You have a message worth sharing

A podcast gives your ideas a home. If you have knowledge, stories, experiences, or a unique perspective, audio builds connection.

2. You want to build trust

People buy from people they know. A podcast creates familiarity faster than most content formats.

3. You want to create a long-term asset

A good episode can become:

* YouTube content

* Short clips

* Blog posts

* Social media posts

* Newsletter content

* Courses or books

4. You want to build relationships

Guests can become:

* Partners

* Customers

* Mentors

* Friends

* Industry connections

5. You want to improve your communication skills

Podcasting forces you to think clearly, ask better questions, and become a stronger storyteller.

The Worst Reasons

1. “I want to get famous.”

Fame is a weak foundation. Most podcasts never grow because the creator is chasing attention instead of providing value.

2. “Everyone else has one.”

Copying a trend without a purpose creates another forgotten show.

3. “I’m going to make money immediately.”

Most podcasts take time before generating income. Revenue usually comes from trust built over months or years.

4. “I just want to talk.”

Talking is not enough. Audiences need a reason to listen:

* Education

* Entertainment

* Inspiration

* Insight

5. “I’ll figure out the audience later.”

Starting without knowing who you serve usually leads to random content and slow growth.

The Real Question:

Don’t ask:

“Should I start a podcast?”

Ask:

“What conversation can I own that people need to hear?”

A microphone is easy.

Building a voice people trust is the real work.

💎 Be Better: Create with purpose, not just noise.

... Read moreStarting a podcast can be an incredibly rewarding endeavor, but many jump in without fully understanding the commitment and strategy required to succeed. From my experience, the most effective podcasts are those driven by genuine purpose—whether it’s educating an audience, inspiring change, or simply sharing valuable insights. I've found that having a clear focus not only helps maintain consistency but also attracts a loyal listener base who eagerly await your content. When I began podcasting, I concentrated on topics I was passionate about and had personal experience with. This authenticity helped me connect more deeply with listeners, building trust steadily over time. Podcasting also sharpened my communication skills—I learned to craft engaging stories and ask insightful questions, which enriched the conversations and kept listeners engaged. I’ve seen many new podcasters struggle because they start with vague goals or chase fleeting fame. It’s important to remember that patience and persistence are key—monetization and wide recognition often come after months or years of consistently delivering value. Identifying your target audience before launching is critical; understanding their needs and interests allows you to tailor content that truly resonates, avoiding generic or unfocused episodes. Additionally, podcasts are versatile assets. Repurposing episodes into blog posts, social media snippets, or courses can amplify your reach and reinforce your messaging across multiple platforms. Inviting guests not only adds fresh perspectives but can also cultivate partnerships, mentorships, and friendships within your niche community. Ultimately, the question isn’t simply "Should I start a podcast?" but rather, "What unique conversation can I create that people need to hear?" The microphone is the easy part; building a trusted voice and impactful content requires intention, creativity, and dedication. Creating with purpose ensures your podcast will stand out as a meaningful, long-lasting platform rather than just another voice in the noise.
