Hair extensions are haram!

As Muslim women, we often encounter questions about contemporary practices and their permissibility in Islam. One topic that frequently comes up is hair extensions. Is it something we can engage in, or is it considered haram? I've done some research to clarify this for myself and hopefully for you too, drawing from what scholars have said and the core religious texts. From what I've learned, the vast majority of Islamic scholars agree that attaching human hair to one's own hair is strictly forbidden (haram). This ruling is primarily based on authentic prophetic traditions (Hadith). Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) explicitly cursed both the woman who attaches hair extensions and the woman who asks for them to be attached. The OCR content mentions this clearly: "religious texts that curse those who add or have hair extensions" and "the Prophet cursed those involved in such practices." Why such a strong prohibition? Scholars explain that this practice is seen as a form of deception and altering Allah's creation. When someone attaches extra hair, especially human hair, it can mislead others into believing it's their natural hair, which goes against the Islamic principle of honesty and avoiding deceit. It's also viewed as an attempt to change one's natural appearance given by Allah, which is forbidden unless for a genuine medical necessity (like restoring a missing limb, not for cosmetic enhancement). The OCR also highlighted that "attaching other hair is forbidden." Now, a common question arises: what about artificial hair extensions, like those made from synthetic fibers, yarn, or wool? The original post briefly mentioned, "It is a difference of opinions on whether things such as yarn/wool are permissible." This is where the scholarly opinions diverge a bit, as noted in the OCR: "The image discusses if attaching string, fabric, or similar items to hair is permissible, presenting differing scholarly opinions." Some scholars maintain that even synthetic or non-human hair extensions are haram if they closely resemble natural human hair and are used for deception, or if they imitate the forbidden act of using human hair. Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymin, as mentioned in the OCR, considered artificial hair extensions to be haram and a major sin. Their reasoning often stems from avoiding the resemblance to what is explicitly forbidden and preventing any form of deception. For them, the principle of avoiding anything that leads to haram (sadd al-dhari'ah) is crucial. However, another group of scholars holds a more lenient view for non-human hair materials, provided they are clearly distinguishable from natural hair, do not cause deception, and are not used for vanity or to imitate non-Muslim practices. For example, if someone uses yarn or fabric to adorn their hair in a way that is clearly not meant to be perceived as natural hair, some might consider it permissible. But even with this view, the general consensus leans towards caution, as the original author suggested: "I would stay away from it to avoid haram ♡." In my personal journey, understanding these rulings helps me make conscious choices. The wisdom behind the prohibition seems to emphasize contentment with what Allah has blessed us with, avoiding deception, and maintaining a sense of natural beauty and modesty. If someone is dealing with hair loss due to an illness, some scholars might permit wigs that are clearly identifiable as such and not for mere beautification, as it falls under necessity rather than alteration for vanity. Ultimately, when in doubt, it's always best to err on the side of caution and prioritize what is unequivocally permissible. There are so many beautiful ways to care for and style our natural hair.
