Meet the gang

Hey fellow artists and character design enthusiasts! I'm so excited to finally introduce you to my newest cartoon crew – a whole 'gang' of characters I've been developing in my signature style. When I started sketching them, I really wanted to capture that effortlessly cool, street-wise vibe, and that meant diving deep into specific fashion elements like baggy clothes and different hair styles. Let's talk about the fashion, especially those baggy pants! Getting them right in a drawing is a real art. It’s not just about making them look big; it’s about understanding how fabric drapes and folds. I spent a lot of time observing real-life baggy jeans, cargo pants, and even skater shorts to see where the creases naturally form, especially around the knees and hips when a character is standing or on a skateboard. For the character with the tank top and pants, I aimed for that relaxed, comfortable fit that still has a lot of visual interest. It’s all about adding depth and realism to something that could otherwise look flat. And for my girl characters, incorporating baggy clothes means playing with proportion. Pairing a looser bottom with a slightly more fitted top, like a crop top or a simple long-sleeved shirt with a cool skull design, creates a dynamic silhouette. You can see one character rocking a crop top and shorts, and even though they're not 'baggy pants,' the overall feel is still very much in that comfortable, urban style. The key is to convey a sense of freedom and movement. Then there’s the hair! The "tied up" look is incredibly versatile for character expression. It can range from a neat, pulled-back style to a wild, messy bun that suggests a character who’s always on the go. For the character with the hair tied up and the fitted top, I wanted to show that even a simple ponytail can have a lot of personality. And for the one with the curly hair, pulling it up helps emphasize her face and playful demeanor. Beanies, which several of my characters wear, are also fantastic for adding a casual, cool touch, and they work perfectly over various hair styles, whether tied up or loose. Accessories also play a huge role in defining these characters. Of course, a skateboard is a quintessential element for this kind of urban artistic vibe, giving one of my characters a clear personality instantly. Even smaller details, like the choice to depict one character holding a lit cigarette (used here purely as a stylistic prop to convey a certain edgy attitude, not to endorse smoking), add to the overall narrative of the 'gang'. My process involves a lot of sketching different poses and expressions to ensure that each character, from the one standing confidently to the one sitting with bent knees, feels unique. It's been such a fun challenge bringing this diverse group to life, making sure their baggy pants, tied hair, and all their little details contribute to their individual stories within the crew.
