Books that ruined my sleep but were so worth it…

Confessions: A Novel

Author: Catherine Airey

Narrator(s): Eileen O'Higgins, Bronagh Waugh, Ruby Campbell, Skye Bennett, Catherine Airey, and Kwaku Fortune

Release Date: January 14th, 2025.

Format: Unabridged Audiobook (Libby)

Length: 12 hours and 18 minutes

Synopsis: For fans of The Goldfinch and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, a mesmerizing and absorbing debut that follows three generations of women from New York to rural Ireland and back again. (Harper Collins)

Thoughts: I enjoy reading books outside of my usual preferences, and Catherine Airey’s *Confessions* was recommended to me through social media. The novel follows three generations of Irish women—Cora Brady, Róisín and Máire Dooley, and Lyca Brady—along with Michael Brady, Cora’s father.

The story begins with Cora’s narration, set weeks after 9/11. Seven years prior, Cora lost her mother, and her father, Michael, died in the North Tower on 9/11. Meanwhile, Cora is skipping school and dealing with a boyfriend who in no uncertain terms, ghosts her. Cora did not seem fazed by her lack of schooling or her boyfriend disappearing as her current world was upended and a new one was set to begin in Ireland.

The narrative then shifts to 1970s Ireland, where we meet Róisín and Máire Dooley. Máire moves to the U.S. to study at NYU, and when Michael enters the picture, it’s clear that choosing between the two sisters could lead to conflict. Catherine Airey’s storytelling kept me captivated as I listened, especially as Lyca unearthed long-held family secrets, leading to a satisfying journey of discovery as she longed to be removed from her mother, Cora, activist shadow.

If you enjoy stories with shifting timelines and deep family secrets, *Confessions* should be on your TBR list. #Confessions #CatherineAirey #audiobookreccomendation

2025/3/30 Edited to

... Read moreCatherine Airey’s *Confessions* is a profound exploration of familial ties, loss, and identity. The narrative transcends time, connecting the trauma of 9/11 with 1970s Ireland, presenting a tapestry of historical context and personal growth. As Cora navigates her grief and the complexities of coming of age, listeners experience the weight of multiple perspectives, especially in dealing with issues like family legacy and societal expectations. The character-driven storyline resonates deeply with anyone interested in stories marked by resilience and the search for self-amidst turmoil. Fans of contemporary literature will find this an essential addition to their reading lists, sparking discussions about women's roles across different times and cultures. The blend of rich character development and historical backdrop not only engages but also prompts reflection on our shared human experiences. Embrace the narrative and let it inspire your understanding of family dynamics and history.
