Harry was so 'UNRECOGNIZABLE' due to the stinging hex, making him difficult to identify. This moment was Draco's chance to secure his family's standing with Voldemort, to prove his loyalty. He could have been a hero in the eyes of his dark master. Yet, he hesitated. He didn't definitively identify Harry. Many say it was pure 'MOTIVE SELF PRESERVATION,' and I agree that played a huge part. Draco's family was under immense pressure. He knew the consequences of being wrong, both for himself and his parents, especially if he misidentified someone and risked Voldemort's wrath. He wasn't '100% SURE' and the fear of making a mistake could easily have paralyzed him. However, I believe there was more to it than just fear of repercussions. Looking deeper, it seems Draco was 'LONGER PRESCRIBED TO VOLDEMORT'S BELIEFS AT ALL.' He had seen the true horror of the Death Eaters' ways, the cruelty inflicted upon innocent people, and the terror that gripped his own family. He was a reluctant participant, forced into a world he didn't truly embrace. By this point, the allure of power and status had faded, replaced by fear and disillusionment. Identifying Harry meant fully committing to a path he was increasingly desperate to escape. So, did Draco Malfoy like Harry Potter? Not in the traditional sense of friendship. Their relationship was built on a foundation of rivalry, class distinctions, and opposing ideologies. Draco sought Harry's attention, perhaps even his respect, early on, but his pride and upbringing always got in the way. However, an unstated understanding, almost a shared burden, seemed to develop between them.
