As someone who absolutely loves calling Oakland home, I often get asked about other cool spots in the Bay Area. There's just so much to explore right outside our doorstep! Waking up in Oakland, maybe grabbing a coffee near Seventh St or passing by Kingsford, always reminds me how central we are to so many vibrant communities. First up, Berkeley is an absolute must-visit, practically our next-door neighbor! It’s got such a unique, bohemian vibe with its historic university campus, incredible food scene, and charming independent bookstores. I love spending an afternoon browsing Telegraph Avenue, or grabbing a bite at one of their amazing vegan spots. It’s super easy to get to from Oakland, whether you're driving or taking BART. Then there's Alameda, a total hidden gem just across the estuary. It feels like stepping back in time with its beautiful Victorian homes and laid-back island atmosphere. I adore their beaches, especially Crown Memorial State Beach, which offers stunning views of the San Francisco skyline. It's a fantastic spot for a relaxed bike ride or a picnic. Plus, the naval air station history is fascinating! A little further out, but totally worth the short drive, is Walnut Creek. It offers a completely different experience with its upscale shopping, fantastic restaurants, and a more suburban feel. If you're looking for a change of pace, perhaps a day of retail therapy or enjoying a meal outdoors in a bustling plaza, Walnut Creek delivers. It’s also a gateway to some lovely regional parks if you're into hiking. Another place I've really grown to appreciate is Emeryville. It's small but mighty, often overlooked but so convenient and close to Oakland. It’s a hub for innovation and shopping, with the Bay Street Emeryville outdoor mall offering everything from movies to great dining. Plus, the waterfront area provides incredible views of the Bay Bridge and San Francisco, especially at sunset. It's a great spot for an evening stroll! Finally, while technically not a 'city' in the same way, the various districts of San Francisco are just a BART ride away and offer endless exploration. From the iconic Golden Gate Bridge views in Sausalito (a short ferry ride from SF) to the vibrant culture of the Mission District, it's always a new adventure. I often find myself hopping on BART from Oakland to spend a day wandering through Fisherman's Wharf or exploring Golden Gate Park. Each of these cities offers its own unique flavor, proving that living in or around Oakland means you're never far from something new and exciting. Whether you're looking for urban exploration, quiet nature escapes, or a bustling downtown, the Bay Area truly has it all right here.
