What I eat during my 12 hr shift ‼️
Meal prepping has saved me as a nurse & here’s why ⬇️
Meal prepping is a total game changer for me as a nurse. Long shifts, unpredictable hours, and constant on-the-go moments make it impossible to prioritize healthy meals during work. By setting aside time to prep my meals, I’m able to fuel my body with nutritious options that keep my energy high and mental clarity sharp throughout my shift. It’s not just a nutrition boost—it’s a time-saver and stress-buster. Having everything ready to go ensures that I’m able to focus on patient care without worrying about what to eat next. It's so easy to fall into the trap of living on snacks and coffee during those grueling 9-to-9 or 12-hour shifts, especially when you feel like you're constantly on the go with zero steps for exercise! I totally get it. As a nurse, finding time and energy for healthy eating and fitness felt impossible for a while. But I've learned that strategic meal prepping doesn't just save your wallet; it saves your health and sanity. Beyond just making sure you have food, it's about making the right kind of food accessible. For my main meals, I love creating balanced bowls that are easy to pack and reheat. Think along the lines of my favorite "Turkey Tomato Cucumber Onion Rice" bowl – it's packed with lean protein, fresh veggies, and fiber to keep me full and focused. You can easily adapt this with chicken, lentils, or even tofu, paired with quinoa or brown rice, and whatever seasonal vegetables you have on hand. The key is to make a big batch once or twice a week. And what about those infamous mid-shift cravings? Instead of reaching for sugary treats, I always have a stash of smart snacks. Those "MID SHIFT PROTEIN BARs" are a lifesaver, providing sustained energy without the crash. I also swear by "OIKOS YOGURT" (the Triple Zero kind is fantastic for protein without added sugar!) paired with a sprinkle of "granola" or some fresh berries. Other go-to's include pre-cut veggie sticks with hummus, a handful of almonds, or a piece of fruit like an apple or banana. Having these pre-portioned and ready to grab makes all the difference when you're exhausted and just want something quick. Hydration is another huge one, especially when you're running around. It’s tempting to just grab another coffee, but I make sure to always have my water bottle filled and accessible. Sometimes, I'll even add a slice of lemon or cucumber to make it more appealing. Now, about those "zero steps" days – I know the feeling! While a full workout might not always be feasible, I try to sneak in movement wherever I can. During a short break, I might do some quick stretches in the breakroom, or take a brisk walk down a less-busy hallway. Even standing up and moving around for a minute or two every hour makes a difference. And on my days off, I prioritize getting outdoors, even if it's just a short walk, to balance out those sedentary workdays. Remember, every little bit counts when you're trying to stay fit and healthy in a demanding job. It's not about perfection, but about consistency and making small, sustainable choices for your well-being.
