The Pros and Cons of being an RN

Nursing is a rewarding yet challenging profession.

On the plus side, nurses make a real difference in patients' lives, enjoy job security, and have various career opportunities. Flexible schedules and the chance to build meaningful relationships with patients and colleagues are also big perks. However, long hours, emotional strain, and workplace stress can take a toll. Nurses are also at risk of exposure to illness and must navigate difficult patient interactions. Despite the challenges, many nurses find the work incredibly fulfilling.

What’s your experience—do the rewards of nursing outweigh the struggles for you? 💉

... Read moreStepping into the world of nursing is a decision that comes with a lot of thought, and for good reason! The original article touches on the core aspects, but as someone who’s lived it, I wanted to dive a little deeper into what these pros and cons truly mean day-to-day and offer some practical insights. Let’s talk more about the ‘pros’ first. Making a difference in patients’ lives isn't just a tagline; it's the heartbeat of the profession. I've had moments where a simple act of listening or holding a hand has meant the world to someone, and those connections are incredibly powerful. Beyond the emotional rewards, job security is a huge comfort. Nurses are always in demand, and the variety of opportunities is genuinely astounding. You can start in Med-Surg, then transition to the ER, ICU, pediatrics, or even travel nursing. There are also paths to becoming a Nurse Practitioner, educator, or moving into administration. This flexibility means you're rarely stuck if you want a change of pace or specialty. Now for the ‘cons,’ and how we navigate them. The long hours & physical strain are real. Those 12-hour shifts can feel never-ending, especially when you're constantly on your feet. Investing in good, supportive shoes is a non-negotiable, and learning to pace yourself and take mini-breaks is crucial. Hydration and healthy snacks become your best friends. The emotional toll & workplace stress can also be heavy. We see people at their most vulnerable, and sometimes, the outcomes aren't what we hoped for. It’s vital to have coping mechanisms – whether it’s talking to trusted colleagues, engaging in a debrief after a tough shift, or pursuing hobbies outside of work. Never underestimate the power of a strong support system outside the hospital walls to help process everything. Dealing with difficult patients or their families is another challenge. It requires immense patience, clear communication, and often, a thick skin. I’ve learned that sometimes their difficult behavior comes from fear or frustration, and approaching them with empathy (while maintaining professional boundaries) can often de-escalate situations. Lastly, exposure to illnesses is an inherent risk. During times like flu season or major outbreaks, the risk feels even more pronounced. Strict adherence to PPE guidelines, meticulous hand hygiene, and staying up-to-date on vaccinations are your best defenses. It’s also important to advocate for adequate resources and support from your facility in these situations. Ultimately, a nursing career isn’t for the faint of heart. It demands resilience, compassion, and a genuine desire to serve. But for me, and for many nurses I know, the profound sense of purpose and the ability to truly impact lives make all the struggles worth it. It’s a calling that truly builds strong bonds, both professionally and personally.
