CONS TO NIGHT SHIFT NURSING
Here are three things I wish I knew before starting night shift as a nurse:
1️⃣ Your Sleep Schedule Will Never Be "Normal" Again 😴
-Adjusting to night shift sleep is a whole process.
What helped for me was blackout curtains, a good sleep mask, my hatch alarm clock, and setting boundaries (yes, that means putting your phone on Do Not Disturb 🙃).
2️⃣ Caffeine is a Double-Edged Sword ☕⚡
-At first, I was chugging coffee or energy drinks just to stay awake. Then I learned the hard way that too much caffeine = jittery, crashing, and struggling to sleep post-shift. To avoid all of those feelings I started timing my caffeine—no coffee after 3-4 AM, and I switch to water or something light toward the end of my shift.
3️⃣ Night Shift Hunger Hits Different 🥯
-You WILL get hungry at 2 AM, and vending machine snacks don’t cut it. I always bring one well balanced meal, a protein fueled snack, and morning breakfast so I don ’t end up eating junk all night.
✨Bonus tip: You’ll bond with your night shift crew way more than you expect—there’s something about surviving those long nights together that makes the team feel like family. 💙
