How to sound more confident as a 26 y/o nurse 💉

As a 26-year-old nurse in Philly, I’ve learned that confidence isn’t about knowing everything—it’s about owning what you do know.

I remember one night during orientation, I was helping a post-op patient who suddenly became disoriented. My first instinct was to panic—but instead, I calmly trusted my skills, called for help, and advocated for the patient. Later, the charge nurse told me, “You handled that like a pro.” That moment changed everything for me.

I stopped second-guessing myself out loud and started speaking with intention, even when I felt unsure inside. Patients trust you more when your tone matches your actions. I also ask questions without apologizing—because being confident doesn’t mean having all the answers, it means being willing to learn.

Confidence is built shift by shift, not overnight. Talk like you belong… because you do. 🤍🫧

What’s one moment that helped you feel more confident as a nurse? 💬

... Read moreBuilding confidence as a young nurse involves more than just experience; it encompasses how you present yourself in various situations. Start by adopting a positive mindset, as believing in your abilities can significantly influence your confidence levels. Engaging in ongoing education can also bolster your knowledge base, allowing you to speak with authority. Additionally, developing effective communication skills is crucial. Focus on active listening, which not only enhances your interactions with patients but also helps you respond appropriately in complex scenarios. Remember, your tone of voice and body language play vital roles in how you are perceived by others; practice maintaining a calm and confident demeanor. Don't shy away from seeking feedback from colleagues and mentors; constructive criticism can help you adapt and grow. Consider finding a mentor to guide you through challenging situations while sharing experiences that can further enhance your professional journey. Also, participating in nursing forums or communities can provide you with support and tips from seasoned professionals, enriching your perspective on nursing. Lastly, always reflect on your experiences—what you learned from them—so you can approach future situations with greater assurance. By integrating these strategies into your daily routine, you’ll not only improve your confidence but also become a more competent and trusted nurse.
