Boots of Honor created one of the most powerful memorials I’ve ever seen.
One boot for every service member killed in action since 9/11.
Walking through it honestly stopped me in my tracks. Seeing thousands of boots lined up like that makes the cost of freedom feel very real.
Seeing the boots and faces of friends I served with was something I don’t think I’ll ever truly be able to put into words.
The Tim McGraw song “If You’re Reading This” reminded me of the letter I wrote for Christy before deployment…the one she would’ve been given if I didn’t make it home.
A lot of us wrote those letters.
Some families actually had to open them.
That’s the price that’s been paid for the freedoms we so often take for granted.
Never forget
Visiting the Boots of Honor memorial is an experience that profoundly changes your perspective on military service and sacrifice. Each boot represents not just a life lost but a story, a family forever changed, and the immense cost of the freedoms many of us enjoy daily without a second thought. Walking among thousands of boots lined up in solemn tribute creates a tangible connection to the human side of war. I remember feeling an overwhelming mix of respect and sadness, recognizing friends and comrades whose faces and stories are etched in my memory. The display powerfully humanizes statistics often buried in headlines. The memorial also brought back memories of writing letters to loved ones before deployment—letters that some families have had to open under tragic circumstances. Such personal gestures remind us that behind every loss is a deeply personal story of courage, love, and unimaginable sacrifice. Songs like Tim McGraw's “If You’re Reading This” echo the sentiments of many service members, capturing the weight of these experiences and the hope that we will be remembered. Memorials like Boots of Honor not only honor the fallen but also serve as a poignant reminder to cherish peace and freedom, and to never take them for granted. If you ever have the chance to visit such a memorial, take the time to reflect. It’s a humbling reminder of the true cost paid by those who served and the lasting impact on their families and communities. These moments of remembrance are vital to keeping their legacy alive and ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten.
