Baby sleep: what to expect at 10 months
At 10 months old my baby is taking 2 naps a day and the total sleep needs for this age in a 24 hour period are between 12-15 hours!
I’m not super strict with his wake windows but he does typically get tired around the 3 hour mark but can last longer before bed time!
His naps are usually 1.5-2 hours but can sometimes last 3 hours, I don’t usually wake him unless I need to go somewhere!
I’m still rocking and nursing him to sleep but once he’s asleep I am able to lay him down for an independent nap.
Overnight he wakes up around 3-5 times to nurse but goes back to sleep quickly and we bed share so it makes night wakings really easy!
How does this compare to your 10 month old?
At 10 months old, a baby's sleep patterns are quite dynamic and can vary from one child to another, but some general trends are commonly observed. Typically, babies at this age need about 12 to 15 hours of sleep within a 24-hour period, which is usually divided into two main naps during the day and a longer stretch overnight. Most 10-month-old babies wake up around 7 a.m. and stay awake for approximately 3 hours before their first nap, which often occurs between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. This nap can last anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours, sometimes even occurring in a car seat or on-the-go, depending on circumstances. After this nap, babies typically enjoy another 3-hour awake period before a second nap in the afternoon around 3 to 5 p.m. Bedtime commonly falls around 9:30 p.m., but night wakings can still be frequent, with many babies waking 3 to 5 times to nurse. Bed sharing can make these awakenings easier for parents to manage, allowing for quick feeding and soothing without fully disrupting the sleep cycle. While rocking and nursing are common techniques to help babies fall asleep, many parents find that once their little one is asleep, they can be gently laid down for an independent nap, promoting healthy sleep habits. It’s important for parents to recognize that every baby is unique, so some flexibility in wake windows and nap lengths is normal. Monitoring your baby’s cues and adjusting routines as needed can support better sleep habits. Additionally, consistent sleep environments, calming pre-nap routines, and attention to sleep readiness can all contribute to improved rest. Incorporating playtime and interactive activities during wake windows can also help babies feel ready for sleep by dissipating energy. If night wakings begin to affect parental sleep or daytime functioning, consulting a pediatrician or a sleep specialist may be helpful to address any underlying concerns. Overall, understanding and respecting these typical sleep patterns at 10 months can enable parents to create nurturing sleep routines that work well for both baby and family.

Oh man! Love this. My 10 month olds wake windows are still really short. In the morning he’s up about 7. Will nap around 8:30 maybe 9 for 30 minutes. And then he will nap around noon until 2 and then again 4:30 or 5 for another 45 ish minutes? So getting around the same daytime sleep as your little one but just more naps! Usually he’s down for the night at about 8
