Bloom: Book Review

I loved this book, it made me feel cozy while I read it. The artwork was so adorable and depicted emotions and such well despite being a monochromatic style of color. It took me about two to three hours to read the book without pausing.

Author & Artist: Kevin Panetta, Savanna Ganucheau

Summary for those who are interested:

Though he loved working there as a kid, Ari cannot fathom a life wasting away over rising dough and hot ovens. But while interviewing candidates for his replacement, Ari meets Hector, an easy going guy who loves baking as much as Ari wants to escape it. As they become closer over batches of bread, love is ready to bloom . . . that is, if Ari doesn't ruin everything.

... Read moreI recently picked up 'Bloom,' the graphic novel by Kevin Panetta and Savanna Ganucheau, and I absolutely adored it! It's one of those books that just wraps you in a warm hug while you're reading. What instantly struck me, even before diving into the story, was the beautiful artwork. The front cover of the graphic novel immediately draws you in with its simple yet expressive portrayal of the two male characters, Ari and Hector, all done in a charming monochromatic style. This art choice is brilliant because it manages to convey so much emotion and character depth without needing a full spectrum of colors, making the story feel intimate and focused. Savanna Ganucheau's art truly shines throughout the entire book. Every panel is a delight, capturing the subtle expressions and budding emotions between Ari and Hector perfectly. Even when just looking at the spine of the 'Bloom' graphic novel, you get a sense of its unique aesthetic. The monochromatic palette isn't just a stylistic choice; it really contributes to the cozy, almost dreamlike atmosphere of the story, making it a truly immersive experience. Now, let's talk about the characters, because Ari and Hector are at the heart of why this book is so special. Ari, who loves baking but feels trapped by his family's bakery, is so relatable. His yearning for something more, for freedom, is palpable. Then there's Hector, the easygoing baker who genuinely loves what Ari wants to escape. Their dynamic is incredibly sweet and authentic. Watching their relationship slowly bloom over batches of bread is just wonderful. It’s a beautiful exploration of finding love where you least expect it, and accepting who you are. Beyond the romance, 'Bloom' touches on themes of self-discovery, passion, and the courage to follow your own path. Ari's internal struggle with his family's expectations versus his own desires is something many readers can connect with. Kevin Panetta has crafted a narrative that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant. The book is also a fantastic example of uplifting LGBTQ+ storytelling, presenting a tender and realistic gay romance that is both joyful and poignant. I also appreciated the overall presentation of the graphic novel. The back cover, as I noticed, features several positive review quotes from various publications, which really speaks to the book's quality and critical acclaim. It's clear that this isn't just a sweet story; it's a well-crafted piece of art and literature. My own rating for 'Bloom' would easily be a 4.5/5, as it truly left me feeling happy and hopeful. If you're looking for a heartwarming, beautifully illustrated graphic novel with a charming LGBTQ+ romance, I wholeheartedly recommend picking up 'Bloom' by Kevin Panetta and Savanna Ganucheau. It's a quick, delightful read that will leave you smiling.
