Why anxiety feels treatment resistant with AuDHD

1/25 Edited to

... Read moreFrom my own experiences and conversations with others who identify as autistic and ADHD, I've noticed how traditional anxiety treatments can feel like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Many anxiety therapies focus on cognitive reframing—changing distorted thoughts to calm the mind. But for autistic ADHD women, anxiety often bypasses just the mind and starts deep in the nervous system due to sensory overload. Imagine being constantly bombarded by loud noises, bright lights, overwhelming social cues, and emotional stress that your nervous system struggles to regulate. This chronic fight-or-flight response means that even if your thoughts say "you're safe," your body remains on high alert. For me, this felt like living in a constant state of alertness: tight chest, shallow breathing, irritability, or sudden emotional shutdowns without an obvious trigger. It was confusing and exhausting because the usual therapy tools didn’t touch this underlying physiological state. An important step toward managing anxiety in AuDHD is learning to identify and reduce nervous system overload. This can include finding quiet spaces for sensory breaks, deep pressure activities, or regulated movement to help the autonomic system settle. Mindfulness and grounding techniques tailored to one's sensory profile also support nervous system regulation better than thought-challenging alone. Acknowledging the need for specialized coping tools rather than blaming oneself for "failing" treatment has been vital. Peer support groups and communities focused on AuDHD can also offer practical advice and emotional validation. If you feel like traditional therapy isn’t fully addressing your anxiety, consider approaches that include sensory and nervous system regulation alongside cognitive strategies. Recognize that your nervous system's unique wiring is the root cause, not a personal flaw. With patience and the right tools, it’s possible to find relief and improve your mental wellbeing.
