Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed government officials to draft proposals for possibly resuming nuclear weapons tests, citing the United States’ announcement of its own testing plans as a trigger.
Putin emphasised that any Russian action would be contingent upon the U.S. actually conducting such tests first, but ordered his defence and foreign ministries to analyse Washington’s intentions and prepare accordingly.
His decision follows Donald Trump’s remarks that the U.S. would resume nuclear weapons testing after a 33-year hiatus, a statement that drew concern over a renewed arms race.
Russia says it has not yet resumed any explosive nuclear tests but is monitoring the situation closely, with officials pointing out that preparation for such testing could take months or years.
Analysts warn that a resumption of testing by any major nuclear power would undermine global arms-control regimes and sharply raise geopolitical tensions.
