"Develter: Two Decades Revisited" Read Identity Through Faces, Tattoos, and Cross-Cultural Journey by Christian Develter
Over more than two decades, Christian Develter, a Belgian artist, used portate imagery as a space to explore emotion, inner power, and the human self, through intense colors, sharp shadowy lighting, and rhythmic placement of geometric shapes; his uniqueness lies in integrating traditional Flemish painters into contemporary visual language, using geometric structures as a virtual grammar to divide, stack, and assemble the elements of images, allowing portate to behave more like an emotional map that the viewer must "read" than superficial vision.
The Develter: Two Decades Revisited exhibition is a look back and celebrate the artist's 20-year creative journey through paintings and lithography that reflect developments in thought, technique and visual language, from the beginning to works ripe in form and content.
One of the main axes of the exhibition is the Chin Series, a series of works stemming from Develtold's 2012 journey into the northwestern area of the Mianma country; and living with various tribal groups, the face of a tattooed tribal woman became a precursor to the exploration of identity, social status, and the transition of local cultures under the modern world.
Develters did not view these tattoos as mere motifs; if they were symbols of memory, strength, and life experiences embedded in people's lines, the portate image thus served both as cultural evidence, and as visual poetry documenting human change along the way.
The exhibition also expands the dialogue from canvas to body, through a collaboration between Christian Develter and the Tube Gallery on the Develter x Tube Gallery Resort Line Clothing Collection that takes language, color, line and geometry from the artwork and reinterprets it in wearable ways.
