Anodynos, when the world is exaggerated, can be a painkiller.
An exaggerated beautiful world, perhaps not a paradise, is a painkiller that makes us forget that we are in pain.
"Anodynos - Without Pain," an exhibition that calls into question that the beauty we see may not be a remedy, but what makes us endure the truth a little more.
The "Anodynos" exhibition began to question pain as an essential element of life, both in Arthur Schopenhauer's and Buddhist philosophies, which pointed out that "suffering" is the fundamental truth of humans, so the word Anodynos was reinterpreted as "relief" rather than healing, a state in which we escape pain only temporarily.
The work in the exhibition is characterized by a combination of classical visual language, surreal and symbolic elements, anatomy and mythology. Artists choose high-key colors that are fresh, bright and visually appealing instead of traditional Chiaroscuro tones. To create a conflict between what they see and what they say, beauty becomes a tool, not to make them comfortable, but to make us look at pain longer.
Works are created through a language of painting that creates a contradiction between "beautiful images" and "painful content," whether it's a baby little monster series that brings images of children in demonic figures to satirize the legitimacy of war violence; Cain and Abel works that reflect loss through the transition from dark tones to bright colors like the encapsulation of sadness; or the images of Narayana and Garuda that use the gods and symbols of the Thai state to question "overly classy" images, while the background is full of complexity.
Anodynos does not invite us to escape from distress, but invites us to question what choices we make in the face of relief. Maybe what we think is happiness is just a pain pill that allows us to live another day.
