CHROMATIC explores the colors, lifestyles and multiculturalism of the old city neighborhoods.
When photos aren't just serving to record a place, they're recording Bangkok's "rhythm of life" through hidden colors in every nook and cranny.
"CHROMATIC: A Journey Through Neighborhood Colors," a photo exhibition that invites us to explore the colors, lifestyles and multiculturalism of the old city by Mick Pine.
The "CHROMATIC: A Journey Through Neighborhood Color" photo exhibition was created by Mick Pine's return to the original area, after 2003, he documented the lifestyle of the commercial district in a young, thoughtful and intense way through the "Shopping on Foot" photo project that used 35mm riversal film and cross-processing techniques to emphasize the color and atmosphere of the city more powerful than the truth of the eye.
More than 23 years later, Mick returned to the same area, but this time he didn't just look at the "changes of the city" if he looked at the "colors" that still serve to connect the people, lifestyles, trades, and cultures of these neighborhoods together.
This exhibition takes us through three major areas of Bangkok: the drawing, the mouth of the market canal and the cahud, through photographs that do not only serve as documentary photography, but are semi-abstract and cinematic in nature, using light, blurred foreground shadows, crop elements, or letting "color" become the main character of the image.
Inside the exhibition, we will see from the colors of the goods hanging in the market, the fresh colors of the Indian steering wheel in the harness, the colors of the fabric and materials, to the surfaces of the old walls, iron bars, windows, and architecture that accumulate traces of time on the building. Some of the images have almost no people in the frame, but they give us a clear sense of the "life" of the space.
Interestingly, artists do not view "color" as a visual element, but as a language that reflects the diversity of the city, Thai, Chinese, Chinese and Indian people who live together in the same area, born into a multiculturalism that shapes the unique identity of each neighborhood.
The colors in this exhibition are therefore not just red, yellow or green, but the colors of trade, the colors of labor, the colors of culture, and the colors of people-city relations.
And come back and see the smallest thing like "color," because it's probably one of the most important things that keeps the city alive at the "CHROMATIC" exhibition.

ถ้าเสิร์ชคำว่า “CHROMATIC” แล้วกำลังลังเลว่าควรไปดูไหม บอกเลยว่านี่เป็นนิทรรศการที่ดูเพลินมากแม้คุณจะไม่ได้เป็นสายถ่ายภาพจ๋า เพราะงานไม่ได้เล่าแค่ “สถานที่” แต่เล่าความรู้สึกของย่านเมืองเก่ากรุงเทพฯ ผ่านสี แสง เงา และพื้นผิวที่เราเดินผ่านทุกวันแต่ไม่ค่อยได้สังเกต สิ่งที่ฉันชอบใน CHROMATIC: A Journey Through Neighborhood Color คือวิธีที่ภาพถ่ายทำให้ “สี” กลายเป็นตัวละครหลักจริง ๆ บางภาพเป็นกึ่งนามธรรม (abstract) เห็นแค่เส้น สี หรือแพตเทิร์นจากผ้า วัสดุ หน้าต่าง ราวเหล็ก แต่กลับพาให้นึกถึงชีวิตผู้คนในย่านการค้าได้ชัดมาก โดยเฉพาะโทนสีสด ๆ ที่เชื่อมโยงกับย่านอย่างทรงวาด–ปากคลองตลาด–พาหุรัด เช่น สีพวงมาลัยสีเหลืองสดในบรรยากาศการค้าขาย หรือสีแดงจากองค์ประกอบแบบโคม/ป้ายที่ชวนให้นึกถึงย่านจีน ภาพบางชุดยังเล่นกับเงาและ foreground เบลอ ๆ ทำให้ฟีลเหมือนฉากภาพยนตร์ (cinematic) มากกว่างานสารคดีตรง ๆ อีกจุดที่ทำให้จำได้คือ “พื้นที่จัดแสดง” เอง—ผนังเก่า โครงสร้างไม้ และหน้าต่างของ TAY Songwat ช่วยส่งอารมณ์ของงานมาก เหมือนเราไม่ได้แค่ดูรูปบนผนังขาว แต่กำลังยืนอยู่ในย่านเมืองเก่าจริง ๆ ระหว่างเดินดู ลองสังเกตว่าภาพหลายชิ้นตั้งใจให้เราโฟกัสพื้นผิว: รอยสีบนผนังเก่า รายละเอียดสถาปัตยกรรม หรือสิ่งของในร้านค้า ยิ่งดูใกล้ยิ่งสนุก เพราะรายละเอียดเล็ก ๆ คือหัวใจของนิทรรศการนี้ ทริคเล็ก ๆ สำหรับคนอยากไปดู CHROMATIC ให้คุ้ม: - เผื่อเวลาเดินดูแบบไม่รีบสัก 45–60 นาที จะได้ไล่ดูซีรีส์ภาพเป็นชุด ๆ และจับธีมสีที่ศิลปินวางไว้ - ลองเดินถอยหลังออกมามองภาพรวมก่อน แล้วค่อยเข้าไปดูระยะใกล้ คุณจะเห็นว่า “สี” ทำงานต่างกันมากในแต่ละระยะ - ถ้าชอบถ่ายรูปบรรยากาศ (แบบไม่รบกวนคนอื่น) แนะนำเก็บช็อตผนังเก่ากับชุดภาพถ่ายหลายชิ้นในเฟรมเดียว จะได้ฟีลเหมือนบันทึกการเดินทางผ่านสีจริง ๆ ข้อมูลไปชม: จัดแสดงถึง 31 พฤษภาคม 2569 ที่ TAY Songwat (ถนนทรงวาด) เปิดทุกวัน 09.30–17.30 น. ถ้าไปแล้วลองต่อด้วยการเดินเล่นทรงวาดหรือแวะปากคลองตลาด/พาหุรัด จะอินกับ “สีของเมือง” ที่นิทรรศการพูดถึงขึ้นอีกแบบเลย
