Where Spirits Dwell, Phantoms, Insects, and Monsters, and the Haunting Black and White World
When surreal creatures are not happening to haunt us, they are reflecting the most vulnerable side of the human mind.
"Where Spirits Dwell," an exhibition that turns phantoms, insects, and monsters into representations of love, isolation, and the subconscious, through a haunting black-and-white world, by Ding Min
"Where Spirits Dwell" is rooted in a philosophical concept that believes that "all things have a soul." Artists take creatures that are often overlooked in everyday life - insects, animals, or ghosts - and relay them as agents of emotions, feelings, and states within the human mind.
Ding Min's works are influenced by fairy tales, novels, psychology, surrealist art, including ideas from Buddhism and Taoism, to the birth of a fragile and immense fantasy world at the same time. Over 200 black and white ink paintings within the exhibition convey a story full of isolation, anxiety, terror and love, through sexless characters in pajamas, which are likened to agents of stepping into a dream and subconscious world.
The appeal of this exhibition is that we are not just looking at art, but are being persuaded to explore our inner world through symbolic surreal images. Artists turn "scary" things into poor, gentle and human things, so that the audience does not feel like they are looking at monsters, but confronts their deep emotions through the shape of those creatures.
