The Preservation of Fire explores Akha culture through homes and textiles.
"The Preservation of Fire," an exhibition that turned houses and textiles into living archives of Akha culture by Busui Ajaw.
The exhibition presents the story of the Akha ethnic groups scattered in northern Thailand, Mianma and Laos, who are facing a state of disappearance of traditional languages, beliefs and traditions. Busui therefore uses art as an area for cultural preservation, through working with real communities, creating textiles, assembling houses, and bringing belongings from everyday life into the work.
The exhibition space is divided into two floors, with the ground floor filled with Akha weavers that are like "life records" of the people, through patterns, indigo, and embroidery techniques passed down through generations. Inside, the fabric is also inserted with the clothes, bags, and real belongings of the Akha people, like traces of people still left in memory.
While upstairs is the "Akha House" dismantled from Chiang Rai Province and reassembled within the staging area, the house itself reveals wisdom that connects both nature, body, and spiritual beliefs, from structures designed to cope with the surroundings, to hearths, food rails, and traces of habitation that still appear inside the house.
This exhibition transformed Bangkok Kunsthalle into both the "home" and the "living archives" of Akha culture, through the revival of knowledge, lifestyle and wisdom that is gradually being lost through social change and external influences.
The placement of the space also creates an interesting dialogue between "life" and "death." The Akha house on the upper floor becomes a space instead of existence, while the sea of cloth on the lower floor is reminiscent of memories, disappearances, and cultural heritage that is awaiting further succession.
