When New York was not the beginning of its success, it was an area of contempt, questioning, and finding what it means to be an artist.
"NIRAT NEW YORK - New York" by the artist Kamin, the great chai, and the curator by the dialectic Botanont.
Kamin Exchamchaitam, one of Thailand's major contemporary artists, is known for creating works that connect art to everyday life, spiritual meditation, and questioning the meaning of existence, but before these ideas gradually become unique, the NIRAT NEW YORK exhibition invites us to explore a time when artists' ideas and identities are still filled with uncertainty and in search of their own direction.
The exhibition borrows its name from "Nirat," a Thai travel literature in which travel is not only moving from one place to another, but the distance that makes us revisit our changing memories, homes and identities.
The curator takes us back to the period 1987-1992, during which Kamin lived in New York, through archival documents, photographs, and works from a period that had almost never been exhibited before.
Instead of telling stories of success, the exhibition reveals a life full of uncertainty, living between Bangkok and New York, between art school and employment, between the hope of being accepted and the idea of abandoning art altogether.
The exhibition also placed Kamin's experience in the midst of a period when contemporary art from Asia began to gain attention on the international stage, questioning how a Thai artist bargained with the rapidly changing art world and how the pursuit of a working style that assimilated art into life began.
NIRAT NEW YORK does not speak of New York as a dream city, but rather of looking back at a time full of instability, and evokes that Kamin's later works were not out of uncertainty, but out of learning to live and create work along with it.

งานนิทรรศการ “NIRAT NEW YORK – นิราศนิวยอร์ค” ไม่ได้ชมเพียงผลงานศิลปะ แต่ยังเป็นการบันทึกบรรยากาศของช่วงเวลาที่ศิลปินต้องเผชิญกับความไม่แน่นอนในชีวิตและการทำงาน ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่ฉันในฐานะคนที่สนใจงานศิลปะร่วมสมัยรู้สึกใกล้ชิดมาก เพราะการเป็นศิลปินหมายความว่าต้องรับมือกับความคาดหวังและความลังเลในตัวเองอยู่เสมอ จากประสบการณ์ของฉันเอง การที่นิทรรศการนี้นำเสนอผลงานและเอกสาร เช่น จดหมายเหตุและภาพถ่ายในช่วงที่ศิลปินยังไม่เป็นที่รู้จัก ถือเป็นการเปิดหน้าต่างให้เราเห็นความพยายามและความท้าทายที่แท้จริง ซึ่งหลายคนอาจมองข้ามไปได้ง่าย โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง การเชื่อมโยงศิลปะเข้ากับชีวิตประจำวันและจิตวิญญาณนั้น ทำให้ผลงานมีความหมายลึกซึ้งและสื่อสารได้หลายมิติ นิราศในชื่อเรื่องสะท้อนถึงการเดินทางที่ไม่ใช่แค่การเคลื่อนที่ทางกายภาพ แต่เป็นการเดินทางทางจิตใจที่สำคัญ การได้ชมผลงานเหล่านี้ช่วยให้ฉันตระหนักว่าความไม่มั่นคงในชีวิตศิลปินก็เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของกระบวนการสร้างสรรค์และการเติบโตทางความคิด ซึ่งไม่ใช่แค่การเดินทางจากบ้านไปนิวยอร์ก แต่ยังเป็นการเดินทางภายในตัวเอง นอกจากนี้ ฉันยังประทับใจกับการที่นิทรรศการไม่เน้นแค่ความสำเร็จอย่างเดียว แต่กล้าพูดถึงความสงสัยและความล้มเหลวในช่วงเวลาหนึ่ง เป็นบทเรียนสำหรับผู้ชมที่กำลังมองหาความหมายในงานศิลปะและชีวิต เห็นได้ชัดว่าคามิน เลิศชัยประเสริฐไม่ได้หลบหนีความไม่แน่นอน แต่เรียนรู้ที่จะอยู่ร่วมกับมันอย่างสง่างามผ่านศิลปะ สำหรับใครที่สนใจในประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะและเส้นทางของศิลปินไทยสู่เวทีโลก นิทรรศการนี้เป็นโอกาสที่ไม่ควรพลาด และที่สำคัญคือเข้าชมฟรี พร้อมที่จอดรถสะดวกสบายที่ JWD Art Space กรุงเทพฯ ช่วงนี้ถึง 26 กรกฎาคม 2569 เปิดทุกวันอังคารถึงอาทิตย์ 10.00 - 19.00 น. (ปิดวันจันทร์) ถือเป็นเวทีความคิดที่สร้างแรงบันดาลใจทั้งสำหรับศิลปินและคนรักศิลปะทุกคน
