... Read moreExploring City Heights is always an adventure for food lovers like me, especially because it's a melting pot of flavors you don’t often find anywhere else in San Diego. One spot that truly stands out is Wat Sovannkiri, a Cambodian street market tucked next to a temple. Visiting on a weekend morning when it opens at 8 AM feels like stepping into a vibrant street festival, with vendors selling everything from beef skewers to Cambodian donuts and $2 coffee. The homemade herbs and veggies grown right there bring a freshness that's hard to beat. If you're a fan of Vietnamese cuisine, Bánh Cuốn Phượng Nga is a must-visit. This no-frills spot specializes in savory steamed rice rolls with ground pork, garnished generously with fresh herbs. The flavors are reminiscent of a traditional Vietnamese home-cooked meal, comforting yet flavorful. It’s conveniently located near Vien Dong on University Avenue, making it easy to combine in a day of food exploration. Though Trieu Chau is temporarily closed, it has long been a beloved Chinese restaurant known for rich umami dishes such as Phnom Penh dry noodles served with a flavorful soup on the side and their crispy, flavorful popcorn chicken. It’s a local institution with over 30 years of history, and I’m looking forward to supporting them when they reopen. What makes these places truly special isn’t just the food, but the connection to the culture and community. Eating here feels like being part of something authentic and cherished by locals. When visiting City Heights, bringing cash is key at some spots like Wat Sovannkiri, so be prepared. Overall, these spots offer an excellent way to experience San Diego’s unique Southeast Asian influences and support cherished local businesses.
