✨How to cook: (Potatoes Edition)✨

... Read moreBaking potatoes is a wonderful way to bring out their natural flavors with minimal effort. From my experience, each type of potato—russet, sweet, and Japanese sweet—offers unique textures and tastes that can elevate any meal. Russet potatoes, with their fluffy interior, are ideal for a classic baked potato. Rubbing them with olive oil, salt, and pepper before baking at 400°F for about 30 minutes gives the skin a delightful crispiness that I love. This simple method makes for a great base that pairs well with toppings like sour cream, chives, or grated cheese. Sweet potatoes take a bit longer to bake, typically at 375°F for around 55 minutes. Their naturally sweet flavor becomes more pronounced when baked skin-on with just olive oil and a touch of salt. For an extra treat, try topping baked sweet potatoes with cream cheese, honey, fresh dill, and a little pepper—as it adds a lovely balance between creamy, sweet, and savory notes. Japanese sweet potatoes are slightly denser and have a distinctive sweetness. Baking them skin-side up at 375°F for 50 to 55 minutes preserves their moisture and flavor beautifully. One of my favorite indulgences is topping these potatoes with Nutella, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and a sprinkle of sliced almonds for crunch. This dessert-like option is perfect for a special occasion or anytime you want a comforting sweet treat. No matter which potato you choose, the key is to ensure even coating with olive oil and proper baking temperatures and times suited to each variety. Experimenting with different toppings and seasonings can turn this humble ingredient into the star of your meal. I always find sharing photos and recipes with friends encourages more creativity and enjoyment in cooking these versatile tubers.

I do something similar to this method, but instead use whole potatoes, poked a few times with a fork, place a Tbsp. of water in the bottom of a crock pot and place potatoes inside on low for 6-8 hrs or on High for 4 hrs. It's a great method in the summer time when you don't want to fire up the oven. and they're ready to go when you're ready for dinner like grilling steaks or chicken.
