Non-stop, infectious rhythms that literally pull you into dancing, whether you're a seasoned dancer or have two left feet like me! I found myself just swaying and clapping along with everyone else, swept up in the collective joy. The atmosphere is just pure happiness. Beyond the main parade, the smaller stages set up throughout the city were fantastic. You could wander from block to block, discovering new bands and genres, enjoying different vibes. I tried pupusas from at least five different vendors – seriously, you have to try them with curtido (pickled cabbage) and a generous splash of salsa roja. And the horchata! So refreshing in the tropical heat. Don't miss out on trying some local antojitos (snacks)! For anyone planning to go next year (and seriously, you should!), here are a few tips I picked up along the way to make your experience even better: Book Accommodation Early: San Miguel gets absolutely packed, so hotels and guesthouses fill up super fast. I wish I had booked mine further in advance to get more options! Wear Comfy Shoes: You'll be doing a lot of walking, standing, and dancing. Trust me on this one; your feet will thank you. Stay Hydrated & Sun Protected: It can get quite hot and sunny. Drink plenty of water and consider wearing a hat and sunscreen. Embrace the Crowds: It's busy, but that's part of the fun! Just be aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings secure, as you would in any large crowd. Try EVERYTHING: From the street food to the local dances, immerse yourself completely. This is how you truly experience the Carnaval – by being a part of it. Learn a Few Spanish Phrases: While many people speak English, knowing a few basic Spanish phrases will enhance your interactions and make navigating easier. It's more than just a party; it's a deep dive into Salvadoran culture and a powerful celebration of joy, resilience, and community. I felt so welcomed by everyone, and the genuine warmth of the people of San Miguel just added to the incredible atmosphere.
