My Favorite Adult Coloring Book
When I first picked up an adult coloring book, I thought it was just about filling in lines. Boy, was I wrong! Over time, I discovered that learning a few simple techniques can completely transform your pages from flat to fantastic, and make the whole process even more mindful and relaxing. If you're looking to elevate your coloring game, here are some of my favorite adult coloring techniques that have made a huge difference for me. One of the first things I learned was layering colors. Instead of pressing hard right away, I start with a very light touch, building up the color in thin layers. This gives you so much more control and allows for beautiful depth. It’s especially helpful when you want to achieve a gradient or a smooth blend. Speaking of blending, this is where the real magic happens! For markers, like my trusted MARKER NOVA or even regular art markers, I've found that working quickly and using a lighter marker to blend into a darker one works wonders for seamless transitions. Sometimes, if I'm using a lighter shade, I'll even use a colorless blender marker to gently push the pigments around for a softer look. For colored pencils, overlapping strokes with different pressures helps a lot, and you can even use a white pencil or a tortillon to blend. Another technique I adore is shading and highlighting. This is what gives your images dimension and makes them pop off the page. Think about where your light source is coming from. If the light is hitting an object from the top right, then the bottom left would have a shadow. Gently add darker shades in those shadow areas and leave some spots lighter, or even use a white gel pen or a very light pencil for highlights. It adds such a professional touch! I also love playing with texture. For example, to make a wooden texture, I might use short, slightly uneven strokes in a woodgrain pattern. For fur, tiny, wispy strokes in the direction of the fur can create a really convincing effect. Don't be afraid to experiment with different stroke patterns. When it comes to tools, choosing the right ones can also be part of your technique. For markers, like the ones I mentioned (MARKER NOVA, MARS), practice controlling the ink flow. Sometimes, using a paper towel underneath your page can prevent bleed-through, especially with thinner paper. For pencils, varying your pressure is key – light for base layers, firm for intense color. These techniques aren't just about making prettier pictures; they’ve become a huge part of my self-care routine. Focusing on these details pulls me into the present moment, melts away stress, and leaves me with a sense of accomplishment. I encourage you to try them out and see how they transform your adult coloring experience. Happy coloring!
