Roaming the Oregon Tides

Yaquina Bay Lighthouse: Tide Pooling! 🦀🦭

Amazing environment to see intertidal creatures! I got to see my first ever live Chiton!!!! Shoutout to the staff here that were patrolling the tide pools to make sure everyone was safe and respecting the creatures of the tide. Amazing place to see sea urchins, sea stars, and nudibranchs.

Plan to visit at Low tide to experience the best tide pools!! You can check the tide chart by googling “Newport, OR Tide Chart”

... Read moreMy first encounter with a live Chiton at Yaquina Bay Lighthouse tide pools was truly unforgettable! But that's just the tip of the iceberg of what awaits you at this incredible Oregon Coast gem. If you're planning your own adventure to the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, here are a few more tips and insights I gathered to make your visit even more magical. First and foremost, timing your visit is EVERYTHING. As mentioned, low tide is crucial, but not all low tides are created equal. I always recommend checking the tide charts for "Newport, OR Tide Chart" a few days in advance. Look for the lowest low tides, often called "minus tides." These happen when the moon's gravitational pull is strongest, exposing even more of the intertidal zone and revealing creatures you might not see on a regular low tide. Arrive about an hour before the absolute lowest point, giving you plenty of time to explore as the water recedes and then head back before it starts coming in. Safety first! Once you're there, take your time. It’s easy to get excited and rush, but the best finds often come to those who patiently observe. I loved just taking a break in the tides, sitting on a dry rock, and watching the miniature ecosystems unfold. Beyond the chitons, sea urchins, sea stars, and nudibranchs, keep an eye out for vibrant green anemones, scuttling hermit crabs, and perhaps even a tiny octopus hiding in a crevice. Each rock pool is a world unto itself! Remember to gently lift seaweed or peer into cracks, but always return everything exactly as you found it. We're just visitors in their home. To make your tide pooling experience comfortable and safe, wear sturdy, waterproof shoes with good grip – those rocks can be slippery! Layers of clothing are also a good idea, as the Oregon Coast weather can change rapidly. A small bucket (with water) for temporary observation (remember to release them gently where you found them!) and a field guide to marine life can enhance your exploration, helping you identify all the fascinating creatures you encounter. Don't forget your camera to capture those amazing moments! And while the tide pools are the main draw, the Yaquina Head Lighthouse and the surrounding Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area offer so much more. Take a walk up to the lighthouse itself for breathtaking panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. There are often volunteers who share fascinating stories about its history. Keep an eye out for marine birds, especially during nesting seasons, and you might even spot some seals or sea lions basking on distant rocks. There are also several walking trails that offer different perspectives of this stunning coastal landscape. Exploring the Yaquina Bay area is truly an immersive experience that connects you with nature. From the smallest chiton clinging to a rock to the majestic lighthouse standing guard, it’s a place that leaves a lasting impression. So pack your bags, check those tide charts, and prepare for an unforgettable adventure on the Oregon Coast!
