Have you ever wondered why sweeping homes is a big tradition for Chinese New Year? It's not just about spring cleaning! Traditionally, we sweep our homes before New Year's Day to metaphorically sweep away any bad luck or misfortune from the past year. We're literally making space for good luck and prosperity to enter. But here's a fun fact: on New Year's Day itself, we actually avoid sweeping so we don't accidentally sweep away the good luck that has just arrived! It’s all about setting the stage for a fresh start. Another delightful tradition that I absolutely adore is eating tangerines. My family always has a big bowl of tangerines out, ready for everyone to enjoy. And who can forget the exhilarating sound and sight of firecrackers? This is a tradition that truly brings the festive atmosphere to life! Historically, firecrackers were used to scare away evil spirits and monsters, like the mythical Nian beast. The loud bangs and bright flashes are believed to ward off bad luck and usher in good fortune and happiness for the coming year. While regulations might mean fewer real firecrackers these days, the spirit of celebration and chasing away negativity remains strong, often with symbolic decorations or digital displays.
