Day 6: Design a Poster for a Dance Crew

This so far has been the most challenging yet fun. The challenge is creating something for a dance crew. Through the years of designing, that hasn't been my audience. The fun part is the experience and the element of camp I added. Hope y'all enjoy this one too! 😁🙌🏽✨

I found it surprisingly fun to dive into a world of movement and energy, and I wanted to share some of my process and learnings with you. When starting on a dance poster, the first thing I do is really try to understand the crew's vibe. Are they high-energy and modern, or more classic and elegant? For my challenge, I imagined a crew with a bold, almost theatrical presence, which influenced everything from color choices to typography. I thought about how a name like 'RADICTAC' or 'RHYTHM NATION BARISTAS' would look on a poster – does it scream dynamic, or does it hint at a more understated cool? That initial mood-boarding is crucial for setting the tone. Next, I focus on the key elements every dance poster needs. Beyond just an eye-catching visual, you have to clearly communicate the event details. I made sure to prominently feature the event title, perhaps something intriguing like 'SOME OBSCURE SHOW,' and all the tour information, including 'TOUR '25'. And, of course, where to get tickets! Highlighting 'TICKETHUB.COM/ANBTOUR25' with a clear call-to-action is essential for driving attendance. Thinking about the performers, whether it's the main crew or 'BROKEN DREAMS FROM' as a guest, helps in shaping the overall visual narrative. Typography plays a huge role in conveying energy. For dance posters, I often lean towards fonts that have a sense of motion or a bold, impactful presence. Pairing a strong display font for the main titles with a clean, readable one for details like 'PRE-ORDER' information ensures both style and clarity. Imagery is another big one – I love exploring dynamic poses, abstract shapes, or even subtle textures that evoke movement without being too literal. For this challenge, adding that 'camp' element meant injecting a bit of playful exaggeration and unexpected flair, making it truly unique. It’s about not being afraid to experiment and letting your personality shine through your designs. My biggest tip for anyone trying to design a dance poster or any event graphic is to embrace the challenge. Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. The 'most challenging yet fun' projects often lead to the most surprising and rewarding results. I hope my experience gives you some fresh ideas for your next dance poster making adventure!
