Gym essentials as a beginner ( I wish I knew)
I’m tired of social media making it out to be that you need wrist straps, a double bag, 2 towels, a protein bar, energy drink.
All you need are the basics to start find what works best for you. I have found the less I bring to the gym the better my workouts. I feel more free. I eat my protein bars either before or after the gym so I don’t have to carry it. And energy/ pre workout is optional!! Don’t feel you need a gym bag to start

Starting your fitness journey can feel super overwhelming, especially when social media makes it look like you need a whole arsenal of gear. But honestly, as someone who’s been through the initial stages and seen my own progress (like going from 260 to 185 pounds on my weight loss journey!), I’ve learned that simplicity is key. You really don't need much to get started and have amazing workouts. Here’s what I’ve found to be genuinely essential, especially if you’re heading to the gym for the first time. First up, comfortable workout clothes and shoes. This might seem obvious, but it’s foundational. You want clothes that allow for a full range of motion without pinching or chafing, and supportive athletic shoes are crucial for preventing injury and maximizing your stability during exercises. No need for fancy brands right away; just focus on comfort and function. Next, a good water bottle is non-negotiable. Seriously, staying hydrated is vital for energy, performance, and recovery. I even have what I lovingly call my 'emotional support water bottle' – it’s a constant reminder to sip throughout my workout. Don't underestimate the power of consistently hydrating yourself. Then, there are headphones or earbuds. For me, these are truly essential. Whether it’s pumping up with my favorite music or focusing on a podcast, a good pair of headphones helps me tune out distractions and get into my zone. They make my workouts fly by and keep me motivated, and honestly, sometimes they're the only thing getting me through those last reps. Finally, and this is a big one for beginners: a simple workout plan. You don't need anything complex or intimidating. Even a handwritten workout plan like the one I use, detailing a few exercises for legs on Monday, arms on Tuesday, and so on, can make a huge difference. It gives you direction, builds confidence, and helps you track your progress. Knowing what you're doing before you even step onto the gym floor reduces anxiety and makes your session more efficient. You can find tons of free beginner plans online, or even just jot down a few exercises you know for different muscle groups. What I've learned to skip (at least initially!) are things like wrist straps, multiple gym bags, or a specific protein bar and energy drink to carry during my workout. I prefer to have my protein bar either before or after, so I don't have to lug it around. Pre-workout is totally optional; don't feel pressured to use it if you don't want to. My personal experience has shown that the less I bring, the more free and focused I feel. It's about building consistent habits and finding what truly works for *you*, not what every influencer is promoting. Focus on showing up, moving your body, and enjoying the process. You've got this!
