I bought both of these from Walmart this past weekend—- and here’s my thoughts:
The mozzarella sticks were absolutely delish! I was very surprised that the flavor of the cheese was pretty damn good compared to some plant based cheeses I’ve tasted. The only thing I didn’t like was that they didnt give the nice stretchy cheese pull you get from traditional mozz sticks and provided a more melty gooey cheese interior instead. All in all, I would buy them again—7/10.
The fish sticks were surprisingly tasty!! Tasted like fish, smelled like fish, texture like fish.. if I didn’t know any better 👀👀👀 I made a homemade tartar sauce for these and they were 🔥 These are already on my next grocery list—8/10.
... Read moreOkay, so after trying those Wholly Veggie! Plant-Based Mozzarella Style Sticks and Good Catch Plant-Based Fish Sticks, I've had more time to think about them and wanted to share some extra tips and insights. You know how sometimes you grab something new and need a bit more info to really make it work? That's what this is!
Let's talk about those Wholly Veggie! Mozzarella Sticks first. While the original review mentioned the delicious flavor, that lack of a 'cheese pull' is a common plant-based dilemma. What I've found helps is really getting them *hot*. If your oven or air fryer isn't quite hot enough, they tend to just melt into a gooey mess rather than crisping up on the outside. I usually aim for a slightly higher temperature than recommended or cook them for an extra minute or two to achieve that perfect golden cauliflower crumb exterior. The box mentions they are Vegan, Gluten-free, Non GMO, and Soy Free, which is fantastic for those with dietary restrictions. They really do capture a savory, cheesy essence, making them a great snack or appetizer, especially if you're serving them with a warm marinara sauce like the package suggests. Personally, I love dipping them in a spicy vegan ranch or even a simple balsamic glaze for an elevated touch.
Now, onto the Good Catch Plant-Based Fish Sticks – these were a true game-changer for me! When I said they tasted like fish, I really meant it. They have that authentic savory, slightly briny flavor that's so reminiscent of real seafood, without, well, the seafood! The flaky whitefish texture is uncanny, and they crisp up beautifully. To answer the query "what do fish sticks taste like" for plant-based versions, these genuinely replicate that mild, ocean-fresh appeal with a satisfying breaded crunch. They're not overly 'fishy' in a strong, oily way, but rather have that delicate, comforting flavor you'd expect from a classic fish stick. The packaging proudly states 12g protein per serving, making them a really convenient and good source of protein for a quick meal. I’ve discovered they're amazing in a 'fish' taco with some slaw and avocado, or even crumbled over a salad for a protein boost.
Speaking of my homemade tartar sauce – it really elevates these! Here’s a super simple recipe: just mix vegan mayonnaise with finely chopped dill pickles (or relish), a squeeze of fresh lemon juice, a pinch of dried dill, and a dash of onion powder. It takes literally two minutes and makes all the difference.
For both of these freezer finds, proper cooking is key. I've had the best results with an air fryer for maximum crispiness, but a hot oven works well too. Just make sure they're not overcrowded in the pan.
If you're exploring more plant-based frozen meals, these are definitely worth picking up at Walmart. They've earned a permanent spot on my grocery list for when I need a quick, delicious, and satisfying meal or snack that feels a bit indulgent but is totally plant-based. What are your favorite ways to enjoy plant-based seafood alternatives?
These look tasty..
