5-Star Review: Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins

Heart-shattering. Soul-crushing. And yet, I want to read it all over again. Suzanne Collins has once again delivered an emotional masterpiece that dives deeper into the brutal realities of Panem. I always knew Haymitch Abernathy was a mess, but now I fully understand why. His story is raw, tragic, and painfully human—making his actions in the original trilogy even more profound. The way Collins explores trauma, survival, and the cost of defiance left me absolutely gutted. This prequel doesn’t just fill in gaps; it reshapes everything we thought we knew. I’m left in awe, heartbroken, and ready to experience it again.

This book gave me head to toe chills several times. I gaped at it with my mouth open like a fish out of water several times. I set this book down to process what I just read and left it sit for a few hours several times. I cried and wanted to hug and comfort Haymitch SERVERAL TIMES. I knew, with knowing where Haymitch ends up at the beginning of Katniss's story, that this book was not going to have a happy ending...there's no way it could. As I read the last chapter and Epilogue last night at 1am, I cried my eyes out.

This is by far my favorite book from Suzanne Collins! I am thrilled that she chose to share Haymitch's story with us, even with it being so raw and heartwrenching. I look forward to see what character she chooses next, because I'm ready for more right now!
