How I instantly reset my nervous system 😮‍💨

I’ve always found it a little too easy to let a bad moment turn into a bad day. especially at times when my nervous system is dysregulated, it can be a lot harder to control my emotions and let things go.

learning quick “hacks” (things that take less than 5 minutes) to reset my nervous system throughout the day was a game changer for me with emotional regulation 😌

do you have any tips or tricks that have worked for you? 🫶

... Read moreIt’s amazing how quickly a small moment of stress can snowball, leaving you feeling overwhelmed and out of sorts. I totally get it. My journey to better emotional regulation truly began when I realized just how much my nervous system impacts my entire day. It’s not just about managing big stressors, but also about those micro-moments where you feel things getting off track. I used to think I needed hours of meditation or a full spa day to find my calm, but I’ve discovered that some of the most effective tools are quick, simple, and can be done almost anywhere. These aren't just theoretical tips; they're my personal life-savers that have helped me regain control and prevent those bad moments from turning into bad days. One of my absolute favorites, which I learned almost by accident, is scent-based grounding. You know that feeling when a certain smell instantly transports you? I keep a small essential oil rollerball—lavender or frankincense are my go-tos—right on my desk. When I feel that tension creeping in, I just take a slow, deep breath with the scent. It’s like a mini-meditation that brings me right back to the present. Sometimes, simply lighting a candle with a calming aroma works wonders, too. Another hack that sounds almost too simple but is incredibly effective is humming or singing. Seriously! I was skeptical at first, but stimulating the vagus nerve through these vocal vibrations can actually calm your system. When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I’ll step away for a minute and hum a tune to myself, or even quietly sing along to a song. It helps release that pent-up energy and shifts my focus. For those times when I need more profound comfort, especially at the end of a long day, my weighted blanket is a lifesaver. The gentle, even pressure feels like a warm hug and immediately signals to my body that it’s safe to relax. It’s perfect for activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which is our 'rest and digest' mode. I often use it while reading or just unwinding on the couch, and it truly helps quiet my mind. There's something incredibly powerful about reconnecting with nature. I try to make time for laying down outside, even if it’s just in my backyard. Feeling the grass beneath me, looking up at the sky – it’s a simple act that helps lower my cortisol levels and boosts those happy chemicals. It’s a full sensory reset that grounds me and reminds me of the bigger picture, pulling me out of my head and into the moment. And then there's left nostril breathing, a technique I picked up from a yoga class. It’s surprisingly effective for calming anxiety. When you breathe slowly and deliberately through your left nostril (gently closing the right with your thumb), it activates the parasympathetic nervous system. I find it especially helpful before a big meeting or when I’m trying to wind down for bed. It’s a focused breathwork practice that brings immediate peace and balance. Beyond these quick fixes, I've also found immense value in building small, consistent habits. Things like keeping a gratitude journal or even just taking a few mindful sips of water can contribute to overall regulation. While I haven't found a 'nervous system regulation app' that completely replaces these tangible sensory experiences for me, I do use mindfulness apps occasionally for guided meditations, which can complement these hacks beautifully. It's all about finding what resonates with your body and mind. The key is not to wait until you're completely overwhelmed, but to integrate these small acts of self-care throughout your day. Think of them as tiny investments in your well-being. What works for me might not be exactly what works for you, but I hope sharing my journey encourages you to explore your own 'hacks' for finding balance and calm.
