38th read: The Other Patient
📚 ARC Review | ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (3.5/5)
I loved the multiple POVs—every chapter had me questioning each character’s motives and trying to figure out what was really going on. The premise was so intriguing and kept me turning the pages.
The twists were good, but I was hoping for a bigger jaw-dropping ending. As my first Daniel Hurst thriller, I can definitely see why readers enjoy his books—it just wasn’t quite what I expected. Still an engaging psychological thriller if you love identity, obsession, and suspense.
Okay, so you've seen my 3.5-star rating for Daniel Hurst's 'The Other Patient', and maybe you're wondering what truly made it tick for me, or perhaps, what held it back from being a solid 5-star read. Curled up with my Kindle, a warm cup of coffee beside me, the cover art of 'The Other Patient' immediately drew me in. The image of a lone figure on a staircase hinted at the psychological depth I was craving, and Daniel Hurst, a name I'd heard buzzed about in thriller circles, seemed like the perfect author to deliver. What really shone in 'The Other Patient' was Hurst's masterful use of multiple perspectives. Each chapter felt like peeling back a new layer of an onion, slowly revealing the intricate, often unsettling, motivations of the characters. I spent so much of my reading time trying to piece together who was reliable and who wasn't, which is exactly what I love in a good psychological thriller. The premise itself is genuinely intriguing – I won't give away specifics, but it revolves around complex relationships and secrets that slowly unravel. Hurst does an excellent job of building tension and suspicion, making you doubt everyone and everything. This is where the themes of identity and obsession really come to the forefront. You see characters grappling with who they are, or who they pretend to be, and how far they'll go when consumed by a single-minded pursuit. The twists themselves were well-executed and certainly kept me engaged. There were several moments where I gasped or had to re-read a passage. However, as an avid psychological thriller reader, I'm always chasing that truly 'jaw-dropping', 'I-did-NOT-see-that-coming' kind of ending. For me, 'The Other Patient' delivered solid, satisfying twists, but maybe not the earth-shattering revelation I subconsciously yearned for from a top-tier thriller. That said, it absolutely didn't detract from the enjoyment of the journey. Having now experienced my first Daniel Hurst novel, I can totally understand why he has such a dedicated following. His writing is crisp, the pacing is excellent, and he knows how to craft a compelling mystery without resorting to cheap tricks. If you're someone who appreciates character-driven suspense over gore or breakneck action, and you enjoy dissecting motives and secret identities, then 'The Other Patient' is definitely for you. This book is perfect for those cozy evenings, perhaps with a physical copy laid out next to your Kindle, switching between the digital and tactile experience of reading. It's a great choice if you're looking for an engaging read that will keep your mind busy figuring things out without needing to unravel something overly complex. So, if you're on the hunt for a solid psychological thriller that explores the darker sides of human nature and leaves you questioning reality, give 'The Other Patient' a spot on your reading list. It’s a rewarding read, even if it didn't quite shatter my expectations, it certainly met them with a thrilling ride.
